First we will revisit Far Guy’s Easter memories. It was a snowy Easter that year, they are standing in front of the of the house you can see the highway and the forestry trees in the background.
Far Guy holding the Easter eggs and his sister holding a purse and wearing a Easter hat/bonnet. This photo was taken in 1955. Far Guy says he remembers that day because he wasn’t very happy to get all dressed up….he didn’t like the bow tie. Easter dinner would have been at his paternal grandparents home… chicken dinner with noodles and pie and lots of times it was blueberry. His maternal Grandmother was in the sanatarium because she had TB in the early 1950’s….visits to her were restricted and the children were only allowed to see her through a big window.
This one was taken in 1958 and it is me along with my baby brother we have Easter baskets. The photo was taken in the house at the farm, we are standing in front of the door that led upstairs.
It was traditional to go to my maternal grandparents home every Sunday for dinner and Easter Sunday was not much different…ham, chicken and scalloped potatoes with a few more jello salads to melt into a rainbow of colors on your plate and many desserts. My paternal grandfather became a widower in 1953 so family meals and big get togethers didn’t happen very often.
One thing I recall the eggs that we colored on Saturday would show up in our Easter Baskets and from there they would go to a soup bowl on the table to be eaten during the week…sometimes the dye would infiltrate the eggs and they would be turned bright colors.
It was great to hear about your childhood Easter traditions.
ReplyDeleteThat is so neat! I don't think I have any easter photos from when we were kids. We adored the coloring of eggs so much!
ReplyDeleteNice to have the photos. We don't have any photos of our Easters.
ReplyDeleteFG sure does look well dressed for Easter. I like the picture for the old time feeling it has. And the same for you and your baby brother. Two Easter baskets each? I guess one was too small to hold everything. :-)
ReplyDeleteYour photos are real treasures! I remember dyeing eggs and cellophane grass that was filled with static. My Mom hid my Easter basket and left written clues in my shoes and around the house.
ReplyDeleteOh my how I remember the 50's
ReplyDeleteWe were with family more back then, not so much now.
They don't do Easter and new spring clothes for church
like we did.
Thanks for sharing your childhood Easter photos!
ReplyDeleteNice to have the pics! I don't think we have any with Easter baskets, but I can remember one Easter picture. Will have to hunt it down and see if memory serves me well!
ReplyDeleteYou just reminded me of when the die would leak into the hardboiled egg and turn the whites colorful. We went to mom’s side near Easter time for my birthday and cousin’s birthday, 25th and 26th. Every other year we went to my dad’s side for Easter. My grandmother’s old house was too small for all that company.
ReplyDeleteYep, we had to "help" the Easter bunny with his egg decorating ;-).
ReplyDeleteI remember having to get dressed up for church much like FarGuy's sister. Dresses, shiny shoes with new white anklets, little white gloves...and we just went home after church so I remember racing in to get out of those fancy clothes because tomboy-me hated them--LOL! We'd have a bigger dinner in the afternoon--usually ham and scalloped potatoes. I remember the dyed eggs, too--if I could talk my mother into them. We usually got one small chocolate rabbit we couldn't eat till Easter. No baskets or anything. Those pictures bring me back. :)
ReplyDeleteYour memories of Easter are a lot like mine. We always ate the dyed eggs after Easter and loved them. Those tasted much better than a regular boiled egg. We all got a new "Easter outfit" to wear Easter Day, and a pretty basket with lots of Easter candy and the cutest little chicks. Our Easter dinner was always baked ham, deviled eggs, potato salad, and either green beans or butter beans.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like no matter how late Easter was in Minnesota it was always cold. Not only did you have to have a new Easter dress but also a new spring coat! We always ate the eggs reluctantly no matter how pretty they were unless Mom made deviled eggs from them.
ReplyDeleteI love those pictures! It looks like you have a fancy new Easter dress. I remember each year I would get a new Easter outfit complete with white gloves, a fancy hat and new shoes. I remember those eggs where the dye came through as well - I was sure they tasted better. Happy Easter to you, Far Guy and Chance! Love your new header!
ReplyDeleteBrings back a lot of memories. We would have a "picnic" ham, and my dad would put it in water and cook on the top of the stove. It was delicious, and he maintained that it took out a lot of the salt. We usually had potatoes and white sauce. Mom would always have cinnamon rolls, caramel rolls, and orange rolls, scalloped carrots. Eggs were colored with hot vinegar and food coloring , later on I think we got the "Paas" brand.
ReplyDeleteGood memories of Easter from a kids point of view. You had some great family traditions.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed how many older grandmothers had their families over often for big meals and never seemed to be tired. And the families weren't small either. Where did they get their energy is what I would like to know.
ReplyDeleteMy maternal grandparents' house was our Easter dinner gathering place too. And, yes, we let those colored eggs sit out for days until that were eaten, color bleeding into the eggs through the shells. They made for colorful egg salad.
ReplyDeleteI love your old pictures as I have so few. I was looking at the floor at your grandparents house in front of the door leading upstairs. It reminded me 9tell me if I am wrong)...didn't they used to have big sheets of linoleum that were used like area rugs. They were just laid down over the wood floor? It wasn't installed like floors are now. I think that's a better idea actually.
ReplyDeleteYou had the same traditional Easter dinners that I had growing up. You and your brother were so cute and all dressed up. I was thinking of knitting some bow ties for the grand boys...I think they are so cute! I still color eggs...I always loved it.
