Photo Bucket List: Baby Buffalo

I played driver yesterday, it was a cloudy day and I knew the sunflower field was in full bloom.  I could double back for photos after I dropped Far Guy off at his Physical Therapy appointment or “learn how to walk properly with a walking stick session.”

On the way into town I saw that the Buffalo (Beefalo most likely) were grazing in the field next to the sunflowers…JACKPOT.   If only the herd stayed put until I got back.   They were even near the approach where I could park the car.

Far Guy told me to “be careful” about five times….either he repeats himself a lot or he thinks I pay no attention to him.

I stayed near the car, the buffalo were quite curious about me…oh I wanted to get closer to that fence…but I have great respect for buffalo and not much faith in that fence…even if it is electrified. (Falling in the lake and getting trampled by a buffalo all in one week did not appeal to me.)

The herd

Low and behold there was even a baby…he was on my photo bucket list.  I had photographed one at the Zoo in Winnipeg…now I have a photo in a field…maybe next in the wild…who knows.

Buffalo and sunflowers

Jackpot!  Buffalo on one side and Sunflowers on the other.

What a perfect morning taking photos.  I had one thought…what if I went into the sunflower field and then took a photo…would I get sunflowers and buffalo? My second thought was “tresspassing” so I remained on the road right of way. Sensible decision.

  1. Great pictures on both side....you were wise to stay in the middle however. Thanks for sharing the buffalo, especially the baby, and the beautiful sunflowers. Have a blessed Thursday.

  2. Cuteness overload!!! I'm glad you stayed in the car...buffalo can charge and especially if they think you are a threat to their young....you know how us Mothers are! So happy you got both in one photo too! It seems the more rural you are the more interesting things there are to see. I dif not know there were lessons to walking with a stick....I may have to sign up before I need one....proactive ya know. First a lawn guy, next a walking stick...getting older is certainly an adventure! Oh, and Nitty almost didn't make it up the steps yesterday...fell midway and I had a basket of clothes in my hands but I grabbed her big furry neck skin and it was enough to give her a hand up and she made it into the house...nothing broken but I'm sure she will be sore today. It's breaking my heart and I guess it's time to get a ramp. I did notice she seems to get more 'grip' on the cement front steps than the wooden ones in the back so I may have to just let her out the front. She hates the ramp too...what's a Mother to do?

  5. They are huge aren't they. When we were in Yellowstone I was amazed at people wanting to get close to them.

  6. So many tourists are gored or trampled in Yellowstone every year by bison. They are huge and unpredictable animals. I'm glad you played it safe.

  7. Two of them! They did look protective. I'm glad you didn't go much closer.
Hope FarGuy's training went well. :)

  11. A baby buffalo, what a find. Yes, I agree, falling in the lake AND get stampeded by a herd of buffalo would be too much for one week. I wouldn't trust that fence either. Those things are big.

  12. That's what zooms are for ;-) although, I see tire tracks in the right of way, you could have driven down there. Yeah right, she says! Jackpot photo day!!

  14. You are so funny. I'm glad you got to see the baby buffalo, well, two of them. I'm not very trusting of fences either.

  15. Our Neil Smith Prairie has free range buffalo. We have never been there but people post photos all of the time.

  18. Baby buffalo are so cute, and interesting that they are lighter in colour. MAybe to blend in with the grass more?

  19. Buffalo certainly look ( and are) formidable. We had the experience of being in our vehicle completely surrounded by Buffalo in Yellowstone. My DH stills cherishes that memory.

  20. Glad you kept the excitement to just one big splash for the beginning of the month! The photos are great, even at that prudent distance. Aren't lenses great?!
