Oh deer

On one of our evening drives we saw 21 deer.   It seems most made the winter in good shape.

Three deer

There must be something left to eat in Steve’s corn field.

Hidden treasures

Some think they are safe, if they cannot see you then you cannot see them.

Deer

These two made a run for it.

Many were too far away to photograph.  I think in a one square mile area 21 is plenty to begin the year with.  About half should be Mamas having babies..uffda.

I had a smart idea to make a raised garden and grow some lettuce and tomatoes…after seeing so many deer I am having second thoughts.

Here in Minnesota the grass in the ditch will green up first and deer feed in the hours sunset and after.  They don’t look both ways before crossing the road…so they become Eagle food.  Driving after dark can be a real thrill.

  1. I just love that 2nd picture. A neighbor told us over the weekend, that he has seen small black bears on our street (lounging in his yard!)

  2. I don't think I have ever seen that many deer at one time. If you do put in a garden you may have to fence it in.

  3. We have a fence around our vegetable garden and so far, so good. They are hungry beasts, aren't they? :-)

  4. I am seeing more deer on the side of the roads again. Our road from one house to the other seems to be mostly timber. We now see pelicans and bald eagles along the way to the new house. I inherited a raised bed but don't know if I will have time to really work with it much. Apparently the rabbits are bad. A neighbor wants to shoot them but I said keep your shooting in your yard and not mine. We have four children to the back of the one house over and he seems to be a shooting idiot.

  5. 21 is quite a few! If only they'd STAY in the ditch instead of taking a notion to cross the road when there is traffic. It was a bad weekend for our deer and we saw many vultures feasting on a drive yesterday. We don't have any in our yard where we are now and I'm much more excited about gardening than I was when they considered my plants a delicacy.

  7. Love the silhouette shot! I think your raised bed would need a fence ;-) I'm not sure they would eat tomatoes plants, but definitely the lettuce! Oh, just checked with Google, and apparently the tomatoes could be deer fodder also.

  8. Interesting that her in the city the deer will wait until there are no cars. I guess there's enough light that they are not blinded by car lights. i've seen them wait for a long time for traffic to clear.

  9. Oh my goodness, that's a lot of deer nearby. I would imagine anything tasty planted would not last long!

  10. We have a zillion deer here also and get this....on top of that people feed them! And they have deer statues in their yards....what do you need deer statues for when you can look out and find 4 to 10 real ones in your yard? Am I the only one that thinks both those things are ridiculous? Yes, your raised bed would be raided....there is some deer repellent you can spray but by the time you spend all that time and money you could just go to the farmer's market...ask me how I know. LOL!

  11. I've seen an entire garden surrounded by 8 feet of some sort of netting which must have been quite a job making. But around a raised bed it just might work. Apparently the deer are afraid of getting their feet entangled.

  12. With that many deer afoot, you would need a deer fence around your garden plot.
I guess their carelessness around cars helps keep the population under control, and the eagles fed. Sad though.

  13. Lovely photos . We have a lot of deer here to and it is hard to spot them as they also come only come out at dusk and dawn I hear the best way to keep deer away form veggie gardens and flower beds is to spread blood meal about the gardens and to have some kind of lid made with chicken wire over them that my in laws did with their veggie garden and it worked great . Thanks for sharing , have a good day !

  14. I'm sad to say that my red Chevro-sleigh made eagle food out of a rather large deer several years ago. I would rather see them in your photos than in my headlights.

  16. Love the silhouette photo! We have elk to contend with for night driving. Not fun to hit one of them!
Tell Chance the pic of him in the header is adorable.
