March 16th is a mighty fine day.
tis the day of the Finns!
Today is the day that Finlanders all over Minnesota celebrate Saint Urho's battle with the pesky grasshoppers that threatened the grape crop. He chased the grasshoppers waving a pitchfork hollering "Heinasirkka, heinasirkka, menetaalta hiiten"...Grasshopper, grasshopper get the hell out of here.
Happy St. Urho's Day to you!
ReplyDeleteGood thing grasshoppers back in the day spoke Finnish! Happy St Urho's Day!
ReplyDeleteHappy St. Urho's Day to you!!
ReplyDelete:o) Enjoy St. Urho's Day.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
ReplyDeleteHey, we have one of those blue and white umbrellas, we could join in the parade, although I don't think there is a Finnish bone in our bodies. Well maybe Larry, he is of Icelandic heritage, and that's within visiting distance of Finland! Happy St. Urho's Day!
ReplyDeleteIt' s good to know you have a useful saint to defend those grapes!
ReplyDeleteI learned about St. Urho's Day living with a Finlander for seven years--many, many moons ago. We had to visit the statue, of course. ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy St. Urho's Day. I enjoy your post each year on St. Urho's day.
ReplyDeleteBut I like grasshoppers. Big St. Meanie!
ReplyDeleteHappy St. Urho's Day! I too have learned about it from you, and every year somehow I forget. Thanks for the reminder! :-)
ReplyDeleteWell Happy St. Urho's Day! New one for me.
ReplyDeleteHappy St. Urho's Day. Is there any special food that you eat on this occasion?
ReplyDeleteWell Fish Stew if you like fish, I make a stew with beef and vegetables with a tomato base...and Flat Bread yum!! :)
DeleteYep, I would not care for the fish stew either. I missed the day to celebrate but I usually enjoy seeing your Finnish friends celebrating it on your blog.
ReplyDeleteI think I should celebrate St Urho's day instead of St Patrick's. I am much more Scandinavian than I am Irish. Do you have to wear blue?
ReplyDeletePurple and green! :)
DeleteHappy St. Uhro's Day! I had no idea there had been a problem with grasshoppers or that you grew grapes up there. That grasshopper was huge too! LOL! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI love it! We should celebrate this nationwide!!
