Turkeys

Cabin Fever forced us out of the house one afternoon, it was too sunny to stay inside.
Turkeys in the road
Saw a flock of Turkeys in the middle of the road, I think they get sand for their gullets off the edges of the highway. Chance was excited to see them!

I have been doing some family research.  One name at a time.

I had a few questions and was verifying a couple of my Paternal Uncle’s Birth Records online with the State of Minnesota.  Uffda.  What a hornets nest.  My Uncle Hugo is listed as Huga, obviously a transcription error.   I sent an email notifying the proper people.  My Uncle Ervin is listed as Erven..unlike Hugo who had no children, Uncle Ervin has several children and I wouldn’t want to step on any toes, so they can do their own corrections.  There was also some question about my Uncle Arthur’s birthday…some family records said November 4…that is incorrect the birth record indicates he was born November 6 which coincides with his grave marker.

At Find A Grave  I have been working on getting all of the children linked to their parents, and sometimes spouses.  Aunt Mia (Mary) is missing.  I did not go to her funeral so maybe I am looking in the wrong place but she should be next to Uncle Hugo.  Aunt Violet was off all by herself with no link to Uncle Ervin so I fixed that.  I am still waiting on several many other fixes.  I get an email every time something is linked so I have some idea and I have kept track of every link that I requested.  My handy dandy Find A Grave notebook is a great way to keep track of progress.

The local Find A Grave gal is the most rude unhelpful ditsy person I have been inclined to meet in my entire life.  She takes forever to do additions/corrections and gets hysterical if I send her an email.  I don’t like her very much and I am certain that the feeling is mutual. I am sure she is sick and tired of my edits…but she should get her butt in gear cause I will send edits daily if I have to so that correct information is out there.

Yes, sometimes I can be a pain in the butt turkey too.

Happy Groundhog Day!  I am certain it will be cloudy and no shadows will be seen but we will still have at least 12 more weeks of winter.  Some things never change in Minnesota.

  1. I can imagine Chance was pretty excited to see the turkeys. Too bad about the attitude of the find a grave lady.

  2. I've been seeing turkeys here in 'the cities' lately, too. In fact, I had been seeing some tracks in the snow that I wasn't recognizing. Then I saw the turkeys across the street and putntwo and two together. Turkey tracks!

Too bad about find a grave. Often those who are doing records are not a relative, so it seems there isn't the same passion to get things right. But with technology, we have the opportunity to get/make things right and IT MATTERS to families. Hang in there I've had wonderful folks from far away doing wonderfully kind things. I requestd a photo of the grave marker for a cousin of mine who died as a baby before I was born and the find a gave volunteer even pulled weeds around the marker and brushed away debris before taking the photo.

You are showing such respect for your family by asking for things to be set right and then the corrected information will be there for next generations.

  3. I always wonder if the birds pecking alongside the road for grit are getting way too much salt on the Minnesota winter roads. Hope not.

  4. Love the picture of the turkeys. Happy Groundhog Day to you. Don't think we will see our shadow today as we are experiencing fog right now followed by a rain/snow mix. Too bad you have to deal with that unpleasant person at Find A Grave.

  6. Your family is lucky to have you getting things right, even if some people are not happy about it, like your local Find A Grave person. (I almost called her a loser, but that would have been rude, even if accurate.) :-)

  7. Glad you had a sunny day and could get out for a drive. I have never understood how or why people who hate dealing with the public, get these jobs!

  8. Here in Minneapolis we are waiting for the predicted Big Storm to begin which is forecast to be about noon today. Quite a bit of snow predicted but we all know that may or may not happen. Whatever. Love your header with the picture of Chance with his ever-ready tennis ball nearby. I had to chuckle.

  9. Dagan and Leah had a flock of turkeys that lived along the river behind their old townhouse so we saw them all the time over there. Now--we both have the big white jackrabbits and I have the grouse.
Cranky lady will learn to get on the stick when you give her information or suffer the consequences!! ;)
No point in paying attention to ground hog predictions up here. There is always 12 more weeks of winter--ROFL! :)

  14. You're really working hard on the grave sites. when I go back to the home cemetery I wonder if anybody in the whole world knows that the grave exists there.

  15. We occasionally get single file turkey parades on our blacktop. Especially when a few neighbors chuck out corn. Better turkey than those white tails who love my white cedars...:(

  16. Why do people volunteer at all if they don't really want to help? It's a mystery to me.

  17. Did you get snow today? I never thought about the sand for their "gullets"? When I first came down here I volunteered for a lot of things but found that the women in charge evidently had no voice at home so they took it out on me! LOL! I was even told that I wasn't wrapping a Christmas present properly (after wrapping presents for 4 kids for years) so I told her she could wrap it herself and walked out. No more volunteering for me...they all seemed to be pretty crabby if you asked me. The presents were for children....do you think they cared if they were wrapped "properly"....I decided they were all nuts and I am now a recluse. That was only one experience of many with the "not so happy" retired people down here. My mantra is smile or get the hell out of my way! LOL!

  18. Your Find a Grave volunteer is no doubt threatened by your knowledge. Insecurity makes people defensive and therefore rude. Surprise her with a compliment, even if you have to invent one. It may shock her into being nice. Kill'em with kindness.

  19. If she did her job right you wouldn't have to be a pain in the butt . I never thought about all the typos in things like this I just thought things like this should of been done right , makes me think how many mistakes are out there on this kind of thing and if anyone else has made the effort to get them corrected or has the dead just been someone they are not and stuck with the dates that aren't true ! yup kill them with kindness and if all else fails then give them a mouth full lol ! Thanks for sharing , Have a good day !

  21. You are not a turkey or pain in the rear. We were taught to pay attention to detail and do a job right! It is very, very frustrating to deal with someone who does not. Persevere, Friend. Persevere.

  22. I wonder how often a turkey gets distracted by eating grit and gets run over?

    1. I have only seen one dead Turkey on the road in the past ten years. We don't have much traffic here...it is kinda the boonies:)

  23. Sounds like you have your hands full with all those corrections. On Find A Grave, if those are your own relatives, why not request that the memorials be transferred to you? Unless that volunteer is a closer relative than you are, there shouldn't be a problem just transferring them to you. Then you wouldn't have to deal with all that frustrating foot dragging :)
