Chance: Getting Older

Hiya it's me Chance the ageing Border Collie.  I am getting older.

I don't  chase the ball as long or as hard as I have done in summers past.   I am not fond of summer...being mostly black I absorb the heat and get hot.  I prefer to take my naps indoors in the bathroom on the tile floor where it is cool.  I also like to have the fan moving air gently when I lay on the couch.  I like ice cubes in my water dish.

Some days they call me limpy....then they usually say "Getting old sucks." I take special pills for my aching old joints.
I still go for daily walks to get the mail and I still chase squirrels and a big old black Raven that comes into the yard...oh and sometimes a early morning bunny rabbit.

I stay inside when Far Side mows "It is a rule."   I don't like the bells outside the door...if someone rings them I want inside "Right now."  I don't like windy days or thunder. So far this year I have had only one tick...that is a good thing.  I have had recent ear troubles but Far Side fixed me all up.
I might have some silvery gray hairs around my muzzle but since I have white hairs they don't show very much at all.

I am ten years and seven months old now. Far Side says "You are a senior dog now Chance...she would know."

  1. Hi Chance, You are so handsome. Glad your ears are better. Some days our joints hurt worse than others, too. Glad you enjoy the cool tile of the bathroom and a fan and ice cubes. I hope you and your mom/dad will have a great day. xoxoxoxo

  3. I now live with two dogs, one that is 16, and I understand all that "getting older" stuff. The other one is a border collie that looks quite a bit like you, Chance, but she is only five. It sounds like you have found a good routine for your "getting older" years, just like happy retired humans.

  4. Hi Chance! Rules are okay sometimes. I like the mowing one. I am not so fond of being a senior human, but since I am one, I take the discounts. Take care.

  5. Hi Chance:
So nice hearing from you. I am glad that you have some pills to take for your joint aches. Join the Club! Many of us have that trouble as we are aging. You are as handsome as ever even with a few gray hairs. Also welcome to that Club!

  6. No matter how old you get Chance your still a handsome boy ! Miggs is only 5and a half and she gets a bit achy and stiff in her shoulders in the damp and cold she gets a special liquid in her supper every day for her joints and muscles called glucosamine . She also doesn't like thunder or high winds and loves ice cubes to and Greek yogurt and water melon no rind or seeds though and has had a few ticks over the years as well . Miggs also had reconstruction knee surgery a few years ago but ya would never know it as she chases bunnies and squirrels and is practically right on top of them and still loves to play ball . Yup you dogs are the best , Thanks for sharing , Have a good day .

  7. I know all about those aches and pains of age, Chance. And I also like to have a cool breeze moving over me when I'm sleeping, and I don't even have a coat that I always had to wear, like you do. That would make it very hard to stay cool in the summer. :-)

  8. Yup, getting old sure isn't for the weak. Thank you, Connie for the advice. I will do that.

  9. Getting old does suck, but imagine the alternative...

Chance despite your agedness...you are a beautiful and wonderful faithful companion. And one of the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen.

Who was the crankiest this week, that's a good way to dole out the cooking duties.

  10. Getting old is a reality. There are many sayings about old dogs. How about "Old Dogs and Watermelon Wine"? I don't like you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

  11. Hi Chance, this is Bear, Linda's 13-year old border collie. I know how you feel! My hips are stiff and I limp around the house now. And I'm also taking pills for my achy joints. But in my mind I still think I'm a young pup!

  12. Good ol' Chance ~ yes getting old sucks~ we have an almost 10 year old Aussie and he still loves to do that herding thing but also limps... I have noticed that he takes more naps too and lets some things in the yard just pass. Take a few naps today Chance!

  13. Hi Chance. All your aches and pains sound like mine! Not much fun but still so nice to be around people that love us so much. Happy Sunday to you and your people.

  15. Ive been in your area in the summer - I'd prefer staying indoors and on a cool tile floor, with a gentle fan blowing, and ice cubes in my water, too. Enjoy chasing that raven and early morning bunny.

  16. It's okay, Chance, I'm a senior also. And on hot days I try to stay indoors as well. Ay least you are still going for walks and chasing squirrels.

  17. Miss Karma is almost ten years and four months. She walks very stiffly now when she gets up from any of her thousand naps a day. She doesn't run and leap after her string toy like she used to. Karma loves the heat, but can't lounge around in the sun on the hard porch all morning like she used to. We're both stiff and hobbly. Yup--getting old sucks. You are still the handsomest dog in Minnesota. ;)

  18. I'm ten years old also, Chance! And soon, I will be eleven and I will have lived with Fuzzy and Mom, oh, wait, Mom for 6 wonderful years. Getting old is a good thing, the other option is what Fuzzy did.

  19. Oh he is so handsome, too. 10 years- wow- that's like 70 people years, right? I take glucosamine for my stiff joints- I bet that would help you a bit, too!

  20. Hello Chance, I am glad you can still blog. Barney is headed for 13 this winter. He moved in as a rescue dog when he was very young and very thin. He doesn't exercise as much as he should anymore but he does like to check things out in the neighborhood. I have to keep an eye on Barney and keep him from going so crazy at the fence when cats and people go by. He can make it too hard to get up the back steps when he has raised up and down on his back legs too much. Barney has thinned down some now that it is spring and I slow down on the dog biscuits now to control some of his intake. I hope your weather warms up a little so your people won't freeze. I can understand why the tile floor would feel go to you. Take care Chance and be careful out there in that backyard.
