Gathering

My girl cousins and I host a Christmas dinner honoring the remnant on my Fathers side of the family.   I made the vegetable soup on Thursday, Aunt Anna came to help chop vegetables.  It turned out great.   Standing overnight in the fridge helps to marry all the flavors!   I took a crock pot with 15 cups of soup, my cousin Diana made Chili. Of course we had some hors d’oeuvres first and cookies and Kathy’s famous fudge and a pumpkin something for dessert.  There were many gluten free foods as several in the group have Celiac Sprue.  It was a good gathering of 18 relatives…better than a funeral where we usually all meet up.  There was about one cup of soup left…so I guess I made the right amount!  No one walked away hungry…and if they did..oh well…then they can just wither away.

Far Guys ornament

The cousins bring gifts and then roll dice (IF they remember them) to try to roll doubles to steal another persons package.  Hot items this year were a bag of fruit, some kind of a digital thermometer, and a deer towel hanger.  Far Guy and I got a food chopper and a set of scented candles(not exactly a great gift for us…I gave it to another cousin!)

Trying to get and keep my cousin’s on track is like herding cats.  I was the only one with a list…no one else wrote anything down.  I am not sure how they can remember it all…but of course they can’t so they call me with questions. 

I cannot organize the entire free world…or my cousins..it is impossible.

    I LOVE that ornament! And it sure does sound like you made the right amount of soup. I'm not a list maker, either, but I sure do appreciate the ones who do. Like you. :-)

    That sounds like so much fun. And I think you are so blessed to have so much of your family living close enough to do these kind of things. My family is more like the diaspora than the remnant! When I was a kid we had huge family events, so big we had to rent the Odd Fellows hall or even part of a school. My mom got tired of it (wonder if that had anything to do with all that cooking ....), but for the kids it was the greatest. Ah, memories!

    It's wonderful that the cousins gather regularly. I lov the idea of rolling the dice for "stealing" gifts at the exchange.

    I often wonder what it would be like to have so many relatives close by. Other than hubby and kids of course, I only have my sister and my mother in this country, my only cousin on my mother's side is in Australia, and I haven't seen her since I was a kid. I have one cousin on my father's side that I keep in touch with, she is in England, and so are many other cousins that I don't know about.

    Mnnnn Well yes. It seem it's becoming more common in recent years to only see our big city cousins at funerals...:(

    I laughed too. I am a list maker and organizer and I really don't understand those who don't and aren't.
    I like your line about it being better than getting together at funerals, which is what usually happens. So true.
