Carvings, cards and letters

I finished up some Santa Carvings they were in my bag of unfinished projects.  The board they were cut from must have had an evil twisted life as the wood was difficult to carve.

At one time I thought I would use this as a project for the ornaments that we give away each year… Far Guy does not do faces…so that put the kibosh to that idea….plus that we have done many Santas.

Errands seem to pile up this time of year…we ran out of labels for the Christmas Cards and we needed stamps…so it seemed a perfect time to go out for breakfast…as you can tell one thing leads to another!  Before we knew it…it was afternoon!

We wrote the Christmas letter and envelopes are being addressed.  I spent the afternoon yesterday cooking (vegetable soup) and Far Guy tackled the cards…I think he was watching a little too much TV as one  envelope made me giggle….everything is upside down on the wrong side.  We send out about 110 cards…some with handwritten notes some without.  Christmas card greetings may be a bit old fashioned…but isn’t it fun to go to the mail box when you have lots of mail!

As you can see we don’t have very much snow…and yesterday was delightfully warm at 26 F or –3 C eh!  I can take a whole string of days with those temperatures…without the wind!

Today I must take down the outside Thanksgiving decorations and put up some Christmas ones.

  1. The Santa ornaments are cute, but I can see why Far Guy doesn't like doing faces. Got my cards out in the mail on Tuesday - I don't send as many cards as I used to. Many I send them to people I don't see or talk to very often. And guess what I don't get many cards back in the mail either. I think social media has put a dent in the card business. Not much snow here either - but we are expecting some on Monday. Todays high is supposed to be around 35 F. Have a great weekend.

  2. Our frigid temperatures are a thing of the past. It got to 41F yesterday and today, 50! I kind of like looking at those Santa faces and thinking about you carving them. :-)

  3. I love your Santa wood carvings. With my Santa collection, I have a couple that are carved in wood, and we have a friend who is a wood carver who does fabulous work.

  4. I still send Christmas cards and I enjoy each one we receive. I have started saving them from year to year. Good thing I have a big basement for storage.

  6. I've already received three Christmas cards, so it's time for me to get serious about getting mine out. I love to receive them, but dread writing my own.

  8. Love your Santa carvings and are they Finnish Santas? They have a gnome-ish look to my eyes. I think they are very usual looking. Here in the Twin Cites of MN we are having mild weather for December and very little snow. We might have a brown Christmas this year. After the hard winter we had last year, this mild weather is very welcome..

  9. I love the little Santas you carved. Also yesterday's lady slippers.
I still send Christmas cards, mainly to people I won't be seeing at Christmas time, and I usually try to add a note, too. I enjoy getting them as well, especially the ones with letters and photos. I'm old-fashioned, I know.

  11. Totally know what you mean about heading to town. Start in the morning, so catch a cup of coffee or breakfast, and before you know it, the entire day is gone and nothing accomplished. Frustrating for the home-side to-do list, but nice to get out and about, see people, tackle that list of errands.

  12. We sent out cards and letters, too, about 75. I need to get started on writing our letter and selecting a photo for our photo card. Yes, I like getting mail too.

  13. I don't even go anywhere and before I know it my day can be gone--LOL! ;) I used to send out about 100-110 for years but slowly cut that over the last decade to about half what I used to send. Well, it was down to about a third, but I keep adding a few more every year (blogger friends--hehe!). When Leah and I mass produce making them, adding a few more isn't the problem. It's gotten to be the price of the stamps--LOL! But I love getting mail (Christmas, birthday, letters) so stamps are as necessary as coffee at my house.

Love your Santa heads. I have definitely written addresses upside-down on envelopes before--ha! Have a great weekend...and let's hope the wind stays calmer. ;)

  15. Your Santas look great. I know they are a lot of work no mater what the material. I use to try to get kids to sculpt in wet clay and they couldn't figure out the reduction process of removing material away.

  17. You are such a talented carver.....the santas are darling...the one on the left looks like "grumpy Santa"...you could have done the 7 dwarves! LOL! 110 cards? I don't even have that many friends or addresses or relatives all rolled together! Good for you 2...you are good friends to many I think. I hope the weather stays moderate for you.
