Pretty Berries

The shrub that we call a “Thornapple” has red fruits this time of year.  The birds like the fruits.

Here you can see some of the thorns.  This shrub is often called Fireberry Hawthorn.  I will call it Crataegus sp.  because that is as close to a scientific name as I can come up with.  The locals call it a Thornapple because it has thorns and apples.  If you were starving in the woods you could eat these berries…they will taste sweet.  No I have never tasted one. 

We use parts of this woody shrub.  It makes a wonderful stem for the upright Lady Slippers that we carve…it looks very realistic.

    There are so many berries out in the woods..I'm afraid I would not know which were good and which were poison, so I probably should not get lost in the woods. Love your carving- very pretty!

    You must have been wandering through the woods lately. the thorns on that one would really give you more than a scratch.

    I've seen Cedar Waxwing go crazy in the fall over the various Hawthorns....:)

    I have a Hawthorn "tree/bush" near me. The thorns are enormous. I was told Indians used the thorns as sewing needles. Your Lady Slipper is beautiful.

    Gorgeous. All of it. And thanks for your comment...The National Eagle Center is great--even though eagles are not your favorite bird! And as carvers, you two will just love Lark Toys.

    You guys are so talented! Not only do you know your plants and their latin names but your carving is exquisite! I thought it was areal lady slipper when I first saw it. See??? I said you were talented! LOL!
