Chance: A Close Call and a Winner

It’s me!!  My turn again.  After errands yesterday we stopped by the lake to smell look around.

The sun was shining.  It was a beautiful day and 60 degrees above zero!! Straight Lake I smelled looked around.  I wandered out on the ice until Far Guy said  “ Far enough, that is as far as I want to wade.”  I wandered around..close to the edge.

Chance at Straight Lake

I got a drink, I was thirsty, and it was a warm day.  Far Side was sure I was going to end up in the water.  Then all of a sudden they were both hollering at me to “COME” as I was teetering on the edge…Far Side even put down her camera for a moment.  I didn’t fall in..cause I listened and came when called.

I wasn’t scared.  But..I learned later..that if one of those guys gets ahold of you they don’t let go.  I was getting my drink about four feet away from this guy.  He raised his head out of the water to look at smell me.

A snapping turtle

It is a Snapping Turtle..not a very big one but big enough.  WHEW..Far Side said “Let’s go.”  If you click on the first picture you might be able to see him right next to the boat ramp.

Now for the Winners!  We drove in the yard and Far Guy said “Looks like we got some winners!”

Chance declares a winner

The area voices local blog winners are Jess who guessed April 30 afternoon and Brenda who guessed April 28 afternoon.  No one guessed exactly right..so Far Side will send them both a carving. (Brenda we still need your address..we sent you an email.)

The blogspot winner is Birthday Gal Francine at Primitive Stars she guessed the ice would be gone on her birthday!  She has had a long winter too as she lives in Winterpeg.

Congratulations to all the winners!  Far Side and I will make a trek to the Post Office tomorrow!

  12. Congratulations in getting rid of the ice formation. I really hope that is the last of the snow for everywhere. Snapping turtles were always a fascination for any kid in my day. The grew to be big and they were always agressive when a stick was placed into their face. You look great Chance sitting next to the stick.

  15. Yikes Chance. You better watch out that something doesn't bite that foot or nose. Buddy keeps his nose to the ground when I he goes out. He runs into things now and then because he gets caught in the sniffing. I can't believe ya'll still have snow on the ground. At least it isn't still freezing. This has been a long winter especially for ya'll. Take care and tell Chance hello from Buddy and Lucky (my new lab puppy. He helps Buddy to get some exercise since he is so overweight).

  16. Whoa Nellie! That was close! It was 86 above zero today but it's been colder too...strange Spring here! Just the other day my Mom's plants got frosted..latest frost we can remember since we've been here and it was 42 at 11:00 p.m.....oh well, live and learn. Mom's son has been visiting and they were both working very hard in the yard all week. He was lots of fun as he rough-housed with me which Mom doesn't do. It was so fun having him here. Annie and I both like him a lot and he makes Mom laugh a lot too. Do you have to watch out for those snapping turtles in the Summer too? Don't you swim in that lake? Mom's daughter got one on the end of her pinkie finger once. She was lucky it didn't take it off! It was lots smaller than the one in your lake though, thank goodness! Good to see it's finally warming up for you there. We had a tornado in our town that destroyed quite a few homes on the lake but missed us thank goodness or we'd be living out of our car unless that got wrecked too. Take care....Love and Licks, Nitty and Annie and I guess Grace now too (the cat Mom adopted)...geez!

  18. Chance, you are very well behaved. Did you get a treat? My treat would be to see the snapping turtle.
What a relief that the snow is gone!

  19. Yay, the snow stick is naked!
We drove to Oliver yesterday and passed through fresh snow on the way. A major highway a bit north of the one we were on was closed down due to over a foot of snow, and it was still coming. Weird weather for sure.
