Finally a Robin! A big hungry one plucking worms out of the lawn near the daylilies.
Just one..and he didn’t stick around very long.
“She Who Sees Robins First” is my sister in law, she is married to my other baby brother and they live next door. She always sees Robins before me…always.
I am kind of a nut about dates..Phenology..keeping track of the the date each year something occurs.
The Robins:
2008 She April 05….Me April 19 ( I thought about taking remedial Robin sighting classes that year.)
2009 She April 11…Me April 11 ( It was really close ..about an hour apart..she defeated me again..but I held out hope that I was gaining on her.)
2010 She April 02…Me April 05 ( I fell three days behind.)
2011 She ( Oh sometime last week I saw four of them)..Me April 04 at 7 PM.
2012 She Sunday March 18 this year..I am behind again by five days. I caught this photo yesterday morning March 23 at 9:30 AM.
See me making the “L” sign with my thumb and pointy finger and putting it on my forehead. Loser.. loser..
The lawn is starting to green up a bit. We got some rain and that helped. It thundered and the big brave dog hid back in the furnace room. He doesn’t like thunder or firecrackers or chainsaws:)
Chance and Max have something in common! Max hid under the desk the other day when we had thunder and lightening. Couldn't even get him to go outside prior to me going to bed. I asked him if he was really a German Shepherd.
ReplyDeleteAwww. Don't feel bad. There's always hope - one day you'll see a robin first.
ReplyDeleteMy big brave dog did the same hiding routine when it stormed here yesterday, except he scooted under the bed.
YIIPPEE ! someone finaly saw the Robing there to bad it want you but hey at least there back for ya. Our Robins showed up in Feb . We have loads of them now ! Miggy doesnt like fireworks or high winds, thunder and chainsaws shes fine with ! We had a nice but cold gental rain all night last night and boy on boy is the grass ever green and thick Papa will have to cut it soon ! Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteWell, now spring can be officially celebrated! I wonder why She sees them first. Do you think maybe she makes it up? Or maybe she has especially tasty worms on her lawn. Chance, I don't like those three things either. I'd hide but the grownups wouldn't understand why. You do, though, we're smart. :-)
ReplyDeletePhenology, huh? That is a new one on me. Come to think of it, I don't think I have seen one yet.
ReplyDeleteI saw my first robin yesterday. My husband said he saw one last week...
ReplyDeleteDuke is afraid of thunder, fireworks, gunshots, chainsaws...the list goes on and on.
Robins have been in Creston since mid February, but not down here where we live until last week. We had one serenading Ted yesterday morning in the maple tree right beside the house.
ReplyDeleteWe saw our first robins this year on February 17!!
ReplyDeleteI just saw your photo of "Putzer" I almost cried remembering our Annie, the same dog only decades ago. Loved her dearly.
ReplyDeleteBuffalogal
Eh.
ReplyDeleteDoes she have pictures? ;o)
Have a wonderful day!
A robin and green grass! Spring came quickly this year.
ReplyDeleteBut YAY! You got your robin! And by the day lilies--an added bonus!
ReplyDeleteI have kept a list of first sightings of the year for more than twenty years. It's very surprising to find out that the return dates for some birds is always within a few days.
ReplyDeleteI love how your sister in law lives next door AND that you both compete to see who sees the first Robin....AND that you keep track of it on paper...LOVE THAT! Please give that chancey a hug for me...Good Boy!
ReplyDeleteWe just saw our first robin a couple of days ago, although I have to admit we have mostly focused on the birds that visit the feeders.
ReplyDeleteBaily hates storms. We always know because she wants in. Ann
ReplyDeleteThe robins here love the dew on the grass each morning. The cats sit inside the windows and watch them intently!
ReplyDeleteAll our pets do ok with storms except Magic, the youngest cat. He hides in the closet!
I keep track of some dates especially when the hummingbirds are due to come back so I can have their syrup ready after their long trip but I can never find where I wrote it down! I should put it on the inside of the kitchen cupboard door...I will this year...yeah right!
ReplyDeletePoor Chance, I know I've had a few dogs that hated those sounds too and the 4th of July was pure torture for them.
I like the "L" on the forehead for me...I could use that except who would see me do it? Is that like that "if a tree falls in the woods" thing?
Have you ever thought maybe she is just lying to you? ;-)
DeleteJinglebob, She is a church secretary..and probably has never lied in her entire life:)
DeleteI love that you have data.... even though it isn't on 'your' side! I need to keep track of it in the future!
ReplyDeleteIt is a great capture. They seem flighty and if they are preoccupied you can snap away. Yes, my neighbors just sits, so she can see more robins sooner than I.
ReplyDeleteI love this! What a great idea. We moved further south in 2010 and cannot compare dates. We're about 5 degrees warmer here. This early spring scares me, though. Our August was very dry and we have well water. I was afraid to use water at one point.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Cottage Country!
I love not have hard winters although not having enough water in the summer is a real drag. It's six of one half a dozen of another ... so I guess I will just enjoy this early spring and see what summer brings.

I love that you keep dates on all this!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Robin' spottin!!!!
I don't blame Chance one bit...I hide too!!! Heeehehehe!
God bless ya sweetie!!! :o)
As you get green in the spring I get brown - mud brown. We would see only green around us if we never stepped out the door and could make the animals stand still. Phenology is awesome! Well the bits of it that don't make you feel like a loser!
