Book Club 2025: October

The book for this month was  Kristin Lavransdatter:1 The Bridal Wreath by Sigrid Undset.  It is Historical Fiction that takes place in 14th Century Norway.

This book is the first book in a trilogy.  So naturally when I found all three books I bought them all in anticipation of a really good read.

Uffda.  It was a slow forced read that I did not enjoy.  I give it a 4 out of a possible 10.  Everyone else seemed to really like it and they all plan to read the series.  Not me...one of the gals said she was not able to find the books so I dropped them all off in her mail box yesterday.  That is one way to clear books out of this house!!!

Usually I like Historical Fiction....so this book was a disappointment.

  1. Glad you found someone who wants to read them. I just had a Christmas book that I just could not read (ugh). It left the house too.

  2. Oh, that is such a disappointment when a book you anticipate being a great read turns out to be a slow forced one, isn't it? Uffda is right. It's nice that the other members enjoyed it and that you were able to pass the trilogy along to someone who really wanted them. That's a great way to clear out the bookshelf. Hopefully, next month's selection will be a much better fit for you.

  3. I read this series when I was a young girl. I don't remember anything about them today. And now that reading is difficult, I'm not likely to try to read them again.

  4. I have been burned several times buying series in anticipation of lots of enjoyable reading only to be turned off by the first book. There must be some sort of dopamine rush that clouds our judgement when we see a series of books.

  5. Oh no...It is very hard to read something that doesn't appeal to you. I know the lady was happy to receive the books and this was such a kind gesture Connie. Hoping you both are still feeling better

  6. I'm glad you could give away that set of books to someone who will enjoy them. I hate it when a book I've eagerly anticipated turns out to be a bore.

  7. For the past few years I get my books through the digital library. I've returned several that sounded promising the same day.

  8. That's such a shame that the book wasn't as good as you would normally find. I used to read a lot of historical fiction, and it is a favorite genre of my daughter's.
Very kind of you to pass along the others to another participant.

  11. So disappointing! I hate looking forward to reading a book and then ending up having to slog my way through it.

  12. I'm not an historical fiction gal. I am glad you found a good home for the books.

  13. I like the name of the author— Sigrid! Books from that time frame I haven’t found to be my favorites!

  14. Oh, I know that feeling — when a book just doesn’t flow, no matter how much you want to like it. Sometimes even the most praised ones don’t speak to us. I smiled at how you passed them on — such a perfect way to clear space and bless someone else!

  15. That is a good way to get rid of books.

  16. I have a lot of books. I check out the library book club books each month. Sometimes I read them. My friend and I often read young adult books and middle grades children's books instead of adult fair. She is rereading Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and I just finished rereading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I have both books in my personal collection. I have lots of book shelves full of books.

  17. I read all three as one book quite a few years ago, after returning from our amazing trip to Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
Some of my ancestors came from the very valley where the story takes place. We stood in the church yard in Sel, Norway where there is a statue of Kristin Lavransdatter, as it is believed that is where the fictional character lived. We went over the Dovrefjell to Trondheim to the cathedral where she made her pilgrimage. We walked in the footsteps on my history. It was amazing, and yes, I loved the books. I had my sisters read them too.

  18. I had wanted to read that series for a while, but then when I tried the sample, I decided against it. My mind is too scattered with everything else to get into something like that.
