Book Club 2025 : May

I missed last months Book Club because we were traveling to a Doctor's appointment.

April's read was a mystery called Still Life by Lousie Penny, the book takes place in Canada.  I give it a 7 maybe...I usually don't read mysteries.   All the gals liked it.

May's read takes place in Minnesota.  A story well written although there were many characters to keep track of...there were some very memorable characters which include a young man in high school.  I gave the book a 9 out of a 10.  I think I will try to read something else by this author.  Lorna Landvik wrote Chronicles of a Radical Hag. Everyone enjoyed the book.

Now I will begin reading something totally different by Debbie Macomber...the Rose Harbor Series before I read the really heavy depressing but uplifting June Book Club read...I have read it before and have heard the Author speak.

Read on!  Oh yes I ordered a few more books. Read 3 ordered some more...total is now 58.  I should be good for a while.  I order my books through Thrift Books because they have free shipping and occasionally I get a free book.

BTW my book club is all wives of Veterans and it is virtual, it is headed by one of the VA Social Workers...we also have time to share about crafts we are working on.

  1. Interesting post, because I have the first book on my list to borrow from the library. I have never read any books by Louise Penny either. I was wondering if her books were any good. Thanks for the post. I do buy from thrift books some times, but I love to browse a used book store too.

  2. Nice! I like mysteries, poetry, and books on nature. The mysteries are to fill down time on rainy days and the poetry and ID books are for studying.
An interesting book I read last year called South of Luck by Jim Guhl.
It is a historical fiction about two towns I spent much of my summer youth in. Luck, WI and Milltown WI [actually just outside of them]. The story takes place during WWII and could have taken place on my uncle's farm.

So interesting! I recall Grandpa talking about the German Prison War Camp they had in Milltown and how farmers could 'rent' prisoners to work on their farms. It was a good book. Not a mystery but a coming of age book.

  5. Mysteries are my Go To reads most of the time. But Lorna Landvig is one of my favorite non-mystery writers. I think I've read nearly all of her books. And they take place in Minnesota, so what's not to love! I must admit to missing my book club group. One by one nearly all of them moved away as they retired. We should consider a "reunion" via Zoom!!

  8. Keep on reading. It's hard to make time for reading these days with many other things attracting our attention.

  9. Sounds like an interesting book club. I haven't gone to my library's book clubs for a while. I usually pick up the books anyway. I need to get back to the clubs. I like the women in them.

  10. I've read a couple of books by Lorna Landvik, but not that one. I have enjoyed her writing. Your book club sounds very interesting and you read quite a variety of books. :)

  12. That's an interesting way to hold a book club. I have withdrawn from the group I joined in the city, as I haven't made it to a meeting since last fall sometime.
We have a good used book store in the next town over. I'll have to look for Lorna Landvik, as I've read both Louise Penny and Debbie McComber, neither of which is a favorite author.
    Enjoy your reading!

  14. Sounds like a great book club! I was on a Facebook book club for a while, but it faltered. I just ordered the Lorna Landvik book. I will put it on the top of the pile. . . .

  16. I love mysteries and have read several of Louise Penny books. I thought they were very good but then mysteries are my favorite and historical fiction and history. I'm going to get that Landvik book, it sounds good and one of your commenters talked about South of Luck which sounded good.
