Andy helped Far Guy bring the Desoto car seats into a place that does auto upholstery. They cannot match the vinyl exactly but it comes real close. Fabric was ordered last Fall...it is the original 1959 design...at $167.00 a yard. The seats are both fabric and vinyl with a gold rolled trim.
There were two perhaps three seat covers over the original seats.
We will have to wait and see if the door panels match the seat covers close enough or next winter the door panels will have to be redone.
Photo of the door panels. The seat is off to the right.
Far Guy would like to keep the car as original as possible.
Far Side
That is a real project isn't it? Wow, I had no idea how much work goes into restoring a vehicle.
ReplyDeleteThe DeSoto is definitely a labour of love.
ReplyDeleteOur neighbor across the street restores old cars - - - like cars from the fifties and sixties. He does a great job and mostly resells them. He will often keep one for a couple of years - - go to shows and then sell it. He was telling us how much it costs when working on them but he usually gets double that back in profit when selling each vehicle. Some work he does - - the mechanical - - but a lot of it he has others complete. The cars look fantastic when complete and probably better quality materials than the original - - like the paint but they still look original.
ReplyDeleteIt's really amazing that there are craftsmen out there who can recreate the 1950s look. I think it's smart to keep things as original as possible.
ReplyDeleteHey! A crank to roll the windows up and down.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you can hardly wait to see how they turn out! What a project...but fun. :)
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean that the paint colour will remain the same?
ReplyDeleteRestoring an old car is a lot more work than I would have imagined. Good long term project for Far Guy and the result will be quite something!
ReplyDeleteIt will be a show-piece when it’s finished.
ReplyDeleteWow! And I thought quilt fabric was expensive! LOL! The door panel looks in perfect shape so I hope it matches. Far Guy has really gotten so much enjoyment from Tilly! I think you have too and the car shows sure seem like fun.
ReplyDeleteOld car restoration can be a money pit, but when the project is meaningful, it's worth it.
ReplyDeleteShirley, Most likely he hasn't talked out paint colors lately!
ReplyDeleteThat will be fun to see when done! I am looking forward to car season ~ it will be here! Hopefully our upcoming cold snap is short lived.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely tricky to match the old stuff!
ReplyDeleteThis has been a fun project, and it looks like more is still to come! Far Guy must be pretty happy to have come so far in restoring it.
