My Maternal Grandparents had a TV in their living room, I am not sure who bought the TV for them as I am certain they did not buy it for themselves. On top of that TV was a shell that was illuminated by a small light. There was something else displayed with the shell but I cannot recall what it was. I did not recall the shell until our daughter Jen brought home a shell from vacation.
The light caught the shell just right and that sparked a long forgotten memory. Can you really hear the Ocean? I always thought I could.
Far Side
Somewhere in my basement I have a shell just like that. I picked it out of the ocean myself and cleaned it up. And yes, you can hear the ocean in it. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteYou can hear the ocean but how that is I have no idea! Beautiful shell and it is funny how certain things even smells can trigger long forgotten memories.
ReplyDeleteFunny how one thing will spark a memory. And of course I loved listening to shells thinking that I was going to hear some deep secrets of the ocean from the sounds within.
ReplyDeleteYes, with certain shells you really can hear the ocean!! Not sure how it happens, but it does happen. Jen found a beautiful shell, does it echo the ocean?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love conch shells!
ReplyDeleteMy mom had a similar shell, and yes - I was constantly holding it to my ear. And yes - I always thought I could hear the ocean. That is a beautiful shell you daughter brought home.
ReplyDeleteThat's really pretty. I have always thought I can hear the ocean too. You can certainly hear something. Maybe it's just the shape of the shell and the way you hold it?
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
My Grandmother had one. It belonged to her grandfather who had used it like a horn. He was a wagon train leader bringing families from Tennessee to Arkansas. He blew the horn at the beginning of travel and at the end of the day to camp. It was a signal to the long line of wagons to start or stop.
ReplyDeleteTwo memories about Grandma and Grandpa form one shell!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in 5th grade we made a “parent” gift with a conch shell. The teacher’s husband drilled a hole in the back to insert a night light (like you described). I hadn’t thought of that in years. I hope there’s not a critter living in Jen’s conch.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful shell. I think it might be sound going through all those whorls that make a sealike sound. :-)
ReplyDeleteAs a child we had a shell just like that. I know I always heard the ocean!
ReplyDeleteMy grandma had one and I was convinced I could hear the surf in there, too! They were a very popular keepsake to bring home from a trip to Florida in the 1050s.
ReplyDeleteMemory triggers are usually precious things.
ReplyDeleteMy mother brought a shell like that home from Florida one year.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful shell! Wonderful memories to have.
ReplyDeleteI have a shell just like that and I do believe that I can hear the ocean in it! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful shell! My grandmother had one and yes, I think you could hear the ocean. Pretty neat the way God created that to work for us.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I were talking the other day about TVs. This is the first house where we have multiple TVs - - den, basement, kitchen, craft room.
I always think that I can hear the ocean in a shell too! It always sounds so exotic! What a nice old memory to come back to you. It's a beautiful shell too!
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents had an old fashioned crank up victrola. It was covered by an oversized crochet lace doily, made by my grandmother of couse. Centered on top was one of these shells.
ReplyDeleteFunny how hings like that bring back memories. My grandparents lived in Florida and had a huge one on their porch. I always wondered if they had found it or had purchased it from a shell place.
ReplyDeleteMy mother had a shell like that sitting on our mantelpiece when I was younger. It was always a thrill, as a special treat, to be allowed to "listen to the ocean!" :)
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother had one of these at her old farm home to keep the door open upstairs. I have that one and I have one a studnet named Sherry Berry gave me ome the first year of my teaching. I do remember when the put lights in them.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting how an object like a shell can bring up memories. Nearly every day I come across something that reminds me of someone or something from long ago. The trick is to enjoy the good memories and let go of the bad ones.
ReplyDeleteFun memory. And I'm pretty sure it's just the way air moves through some shells that makes it appear you can hear the ocean. Still nice that it seems like you can though.
