What would you hold in your cupped hands?
I read an article about this sculpture called "Hidden Treasures" the sculptor gave his explanation.
Then it clicked.
Sure enough I recall at my Uncle Ervin and Aunt Violets farm in the summer at dark the fireflies would be out and we would catch them in our hands...your hand would light up...however they left green goo... no doubt firefly poop in your hand. I am sure the treasure must have been your hand lighting up not the poop.
Far Side
The sculptor said in an article“It’s suspended by its own weight,” he said. “I’ve never separated wood into dyads before. The challenge was to separate the piece of white pine, hollow the inside and put the pieces back together. It was experimental, a prototype to see if I could do it.”
Gee, I liked the bugs and blades better. These hands creep me out like they might reach out and grab!
ReplyDeleteI still catch lightening bugs!
We didn't have fireflies here...but I remember catching small frogs and holding them in my hands. I don't recall if they pooped. :)
ReplyDeleteSo interesting... and beautiful!! ~Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteInteresting sculpture. I like it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for finding out what MIGHT be inside those hands. I've never caught a lightning bug but I do remember seeing them occasionally. :-)
ReplyDeleteI think I could put up with the poop if it meant my hands could light up. Sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteQuite an amazing sculpture :)
I love the explanation and I am positive it is a "lightening bug"!
ReplyDeleteI remember fireflies from my childhood but I don't know if I ever succeeded in catching any.
ReplyDeleteI remember a song accompagnying a game. Holding a ring in your cupped hands passing it on, or not. You had to guess where the ring was when the song ended.
ReplyDeleteNow you know, this sculpture was constructed with two pieces. We always used jars/cups to catch fireflies. Looks like a birdie pooped on the ring finger.
ReplyDeleteI would hold milkweed seeds, right before spreading my wishes!
Great story with this sculpture.
ReplyDeleteNow why didn't an Iowa girl like me think of that? I used to catch fireflies and hold them like that all of the time. And yes, sometimes they pooped!
ReplyDeleteFun times!
Blessings,
Betsy
Thank goodness it's not neon poop glowing... LOL! What a great story for this sculpture!
ReplyDeleteOh, now that makes sense--LOL! :)
ReplyDeleteI was quite young but Bill Hafner was visiting with his parents, Hank and Zee. Bill caught a firefly and took and rubbed large body portion on to my eyelids when I had my eyes closed. The green coloring that we observe when they light up was now visible when I blinked my eyes. I’m hoping you’re in error and that it wasn’t poop. ;-)
ReplyDeleteInteresting indeed
ReplyDeleteYes, lightening bugs....perfect!
ReplyDeleteI remember doing that with lightning bugs, too. When I first saw your question though the song He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands popped right into my head!
