Yes. I am old enough. The cars are beautiful! I am not sure when our family got a TV but I do remember that at one point it wasn't working and my parents decided not to get it fixed for a while (I think maybe they didn't have the money)because they wanted us kids to go outside and play. I do remember there were places at the stores where you could test the tubes that went in the back of the TV to see if they needed replacing.
Wow. I'm trying to think back. The first TV I remember was in a house we moved to in 1968. But we MUST have had a TV prior to that. WAIT! I remember coming home from school the day Kennedy was killed and my mom was crying and watching the TV, so we must have had one in 1963...hmmmm....
Anyway, this Saturday is the Woodward Dream Cruise here (actually not HERE, but about 20 miles away in Pontiac). It's a one day event, where people from all over the world drive their classic cars and muscle cars up and down Woodward Avenue just like they used to do in the 50s. Plus there are multiple car shows set up in parking lots all up and down the Avenue. I am debating going. I've been there twice and enjoyed taking pictures of the cars (or parts of cars). It's usually a crowded thing though and I'm not into crowds these days. We'll see what I do when Saturday gets here.
We always had a tv, even though the 1st ones I remember were black & white. I remember getting a microwave when I was a teenager in the late 70s. Karen
Yes I can hear the tune now. Road trip memories as well. My family got a TV, black and white of course, when I had my tonsils out around 1957. We lived in the Los Angeles suburbs so we had an antenna on our roof as well. We got 7 channels - 2 CBS, 4 NBC, 7 ABC, 5 KTLA, 9 KHJ, 11 KTTV AND 13 KCOP. Amazing brain that remembers these by heart but forget so much else.
"In Your Chevrolet". Is that right? I don't remember when we got our first TV because I was born in 1960, but I think I remember Mom saying it was 1959. It was ALWAYS on. From when someone woke up until they went to bed at night. We rarely have ours on, usually watching videos or utube and then shutting it off. Blessings, Betsy
I don't remember when we got a tv, but I do know my mother got the first color tv on our street when I was in fourth grade. Even my teacher was impressed when I told the story at show and tell. Unfortunately, not many shows were in color.
I remember that song well! "See the USA in your Chevrolet" I also remember the Dinah Shore show. We got our first TV in the mid 50s and I remember those early shows well. How things have changed!
Remembered the song immediately. We must have gotten our first small balck and white (all they had back then) in about 1954 or 1955, too. I know we had one for quite a while before we moved to Fridley, MN in 1956. I mostly remember the Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights. Mom and Dad watched playhouses and MIlton Berle...that's about all I remember from the very early years. We had an old Ford of some kind. So old it had a hole on the floor of the backseat and when you turned a corner the passenger door flew open! Childhood memories.

I do remember Dinah Shore singing that song. I can still sing it - not well, but it would be recognizable. LOL. We got a TV, and a puppy, in 1959 when I was 5. The puppy lasted much longer than that first TV did.
I remember that Dinah Shore song very well! I could sing it right now! So fun to see the old cars you're featuring. Had to be a fun car show! Take good care. Try to stay cool too.
My sister and I sang that song often as we traveled the highways on our annual family vacations, in spite of the fact that all our travels were done in Fords.
I'm glad that there are people who so love old cars that they restore them for the rest of us to enjoy and remember. I remember a time when kids were either Ford or Chevy fans depending upon what their parents owned. I preferred Fords, and so it was that when I got to high school, I got to drive around in my family's '56 Fairlane.

ReplyDelete57 Chevies! We had one the same color as the station wagon only a sedan. They did 95 mph on a gravel road...at least ours did and Dad never caught us.
