The smoke from the Wildfires in Canada moved into our area yesterday. They say it will move out sometime on Friday.
I had a day where I did odds and ends all day long...the Electrician was back again due to problems with the new thermostat...a special part was ordered. In the meantime he hooked up our old thermostat and it works perfectly. I sprayed Thistle and Poison Ivy and weeds in rocks around our home and up at my other baby brothers shop. I am caught up for a few days.
We will be doing very little outside today because of the smoke.

The tomato plants are really growing!
I think I may have to trim them some...so they don't get so tall that they fall over. They are loaded with tomatoes...so it looks like a bumper crop.

ReplyDeleteIt is a never ending battle with certain weeds. I have to go spray/chop the burdock and the elderberry. A tiny war I am slowly gaining on.
Our ‘mater plants are huge too. Tank says “bring on the tomatoes”!! I would also limit my time outside with smoky air. Not good for any living being.
ReplyDeleteOur tomatoes are producing. I do cheat, I buy the already staked plants at my Amish nursery. A dinner most nights we have sliced tomatoes with a little salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and an olive oil drizzle. I cut them, season and drizzle in early afternoon so they are warm at dinner. Last night I put thick slices on a cookie sheet with all the regular stuff and stuck them under the broil. When I have it on hand - we put goat cheese on top of them, hot or cold. We love our maters.
ReplyDeleteWe just let them fall over. They are hardy enough to withstand the flipping it takes to pick tomatoes from both sides.
ReplyDeleteI am so ready for fresh tomatoes, but the farm stand near me hasn't opened up yet for the season. That is pretty surprising, but maybe the drought has had an impact. We have heavy fog this morning, but after seeing your photo I'm questioning whether it is maybe smoke as well as fog. A friend of mine has posted photos the past couple of days from their northern MN lake cabin, and the smoke was awful. Good plan to stay indoors!

ReplyDeleteThe smoke is just terrible everywhere north and west. Spokane is also in the dangerous air quality levels.

The tomato looks like a prized possession with the dear guard gates all around it. I had not heard about the firs in Canada but the ones in California.
ReplyDeleteWhen I got my new furnace and air conditioner this spring, I insisted on keeping the old thermostat. Combination of Tom's concern about security and some bad experiences I have had with computer controlled machines...which is almost everything nowadays.
ReplyDeleteOur smoke is coming from the west (California, Arizona, et al). I think the worst is yet to come.

Fresh tomatoes warm from the sun are one of my favorite parts of summer - fresh cucumbers, too.

ReplyDeleteWhew, that does look smoky. I would think it would bother your eyes if you went out. You need a big wind to get it moving south.
