Wistful Wednesday: Road work

In 1967 my cousin Dwight was just a little shaver.

He is the oldest son of my Uncle Dennis ( my Mom's brother) and Aunt Judy.  He now runs his Dad and Mothers construction company.   He got the contract to build our new road.

One day we stopped to say Hi and  Dwight came over for a hug.  That is his Cat to the left...no one touches his Cat.

The road is coming along, the old highway was built on black dirt...so there has been quite a bit of excavation to renew the base .
We have a new corner now.

Our old corner on the left the new corner on the right.

We add a few extra minutes onto our drive to town and our vehicle is dusty most of the time.   But progress is being made on the road.  The ditches are deeper than they were before and the highway up higher so the snow should blow off the road instead of collect in drifts.
Hopefully the road will be paved before winter.  After all the dirt work is done a paving company will come in and blacktop the road.

  3. Interesting. So will the old road just return to grass or is black dirt not actually dirt?

  5. You certainly have a trustworthy contractor doing your new road! Boy, he was a cutie pie way back when.

  6. I'm sure the change will be worth the long process. Not drifting over in the winter is probably the best thing to look forward to.

  7. Although I don't enjoy the construction process, mess and inconvenience, when it is all done it's usually worth it. We call summer, road work season here in Spokane. There doesn't seem to be a main road that isn't being worked on. Your cousin was sure a cutey back in the day. I was 7 that year. He looks like all of the little boys I remember.
    Blessings,

  8. I hope it gets paved before the snow flies and the snow does drift right off the road. Good for him getting the contract. :)

  9. I admire your cousin Dwight! I would look at a job like this and have not a clue as to where to even start. It looks like such a daunting task! I hope it gets finished before the snow flies... which will be here before we blink. Love, Andrea xoxo

  10. The paved road will be great. I grew up on the farm and recall the dusty summer roads very well.

  11. As long as he enjoys his job and is good at it all then that matters

  12. You are the only person I know who has a relative building a new local road. But then where you live I sense you are related to almost everybody. :-)

  14. The new road doesn't look much different from the old one but if it's built on a better base and also lets snow blow over better in winter I suppose it's a good thing. I hope the paving happens before then.

  15. Isn't it amazing that even when you live rural there is always something going on. What a cute little guy....I imagine he's a cute big guy now. I tlook like it will be a much better road for you and others.

  16. My late brother was named Dwight in 1947. It is interesting to see this Dwight was born 20 years later. Your Dwight sounds like a hard working man. It is neat that you can see his crew at work and I hope they get it done soon.

  17. It has been interesting watching it turn into the "new road" - we visit on 4wheeler to see what is going on. :)

  18. That’s a big job. And they don’t have much time to get it all shipshape before the snow comes back either. I wonder if your nephew was one of those cute kids who built endless roads in the sandbox and dirt in preparation for his career as a grownup!
