Red Headed Woodpecker

We had an interesting visitor!   I have not see a Red headed Woodpecker in a long time...our area is in his breeding range but he does not live here year round like they do in Southern Minnesota.

He was probably just passing through....or lost.

He enjoyed the bird bath.
I sure enjoyed watching him...he was only here one day as far as I know.

  1. Lucky you. I have never seen one. Last year we had a Red-Bellied Woodpecker at my feeder. So far this year I haven't seen him . Only the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers.

  4. There is one that pops by here every so often. I see a few of them along. Seems like every time we are out for a rambling drive, I see one or two.

  5. What a beautiful bird! I've never seen one anywhere, except here today on your blog. I hope you and FG have a laid-back and restful Memorial Day weekend. :-)

  6. Maybe he will stick around? We hadn't seen these in ages too...but since we are further south we get to see them quite often now.

  9. We didn't use to see woodpeckers much at all but recently we have seen many more. We even have one with a nest in one of our trees. Your pictures are great!

  11. Aren’t they beautiful? We seldom saw them in southern Minnesota anymore, nothing like we used to.

  12. People who live along the two rivers do see them but I haven’t seen one like this for years. I remember seeing them as a kid in southern Iowa timbers. You did well to get the two shots.

  13. Isn't he pretty!! I'm really enjoying having a feeder in my yard, watching the variety of birds some through the yard. The cats are loving it too. ;)

  14. Steve and I were lucky enough to see one at Brukner Nature Center a couple weeks ago. Usually when we see them, they are passing through. They are a striking bird.

  16. Aren't they gorgeous. They are plentiful in Arkansas -- I've seen many at a park that straddles the state line, which is about 40 miles from here, but I have only seen one at our place once, briefly, and then it was gone.

  17. I've never seen one here in Todd Co. We had them when I was a kid in Anoka County. They liked the red oaks. Phil

Oh what a beautiful bird! We used to get those when we lived farther south in Wisconsin. I saw my first Pileated woodpecker up here in the Northwoods last summer. Wow...are they big birds! I Love seeing all the birds that visit you. Thanks for an always great blog!
