Cherries

The Pin Cherries are in bloom.

Pin Cherry

They are always the first shrub/tree to bloom in our area of Minnesota.

Chokecherry buds

Next will be the Chokecherries. Maybe enough fruit this year to make some jelly.

I mowed the lawn for the first time yesterday.  Thus it begins.

  1. Not too many people love the chokecherry as I do! And you too? That is awesome! We used to look for those trees as a kid and go pick the cherries for jelly. My Grandmother also made jello with chokecherry juice. It truly it a great taste!
    Mowing. Eeeks. Dis...like it!
One summer I fenced off the yard to let the mules eat the yard down because it got away from me.

  2. Crabapple trees are in full bloom as well as the Lilac bushes. With all our rain it is hard to keep up with the lawn mowing. I've done it twice already. The "pond" in my backyard just won't dry up so some ducks have taken up residence there.

  3. Chokecherries! There's a memory. My grandmother would serve chokecherry jelly to us when I was a kid. Hope you get enough to make your jelly!

  4. My Mom was always scouting the area for chokecherries and currant bushes on abandoned farms. When it was time to pick, we'd arrive buckets in hand. Good memories.

  7. Lilacs began blooming around here last week which is always the first sign of spring. Mowing has been going on for a few weeks now. I love those sweet little blooms. They look so delicate.

  8. Nice, we planted lilac's last year and they are tiny and we have flowers already. You are right the season for mowing has started. I think we have mowed ours twice so far.

  10. Yes, now the cycle of growth ( and work) begins.
At home we had chokecherry syrup, a thin sort of jelly my mom made. we used to sop our bread in it.

  11. There are many blooms here this year so there should be a good crop of berries.

  12. Oh, I hope you get enough for some jelly!

It seems so strange to see your photos with the trees so bare. Last weekend, we had cherries for dessert. It's cherry harvest season here already, so we are much deeper into the green in our neck o' the woods.
