Reading

I have been plunged back in time by 55 years.

My baby brother thought I might need some reading material.  So he ordered a box of books to be delivered to me.  I should read them first and then take them over to his almost completed lake home so someday his Grandchildren can read the books he read as a child.

I was not aware that BOTH of my brothers read my books…

Mine were purchased at the old Woolworth Store in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.  Back then the books were less than a dollar (97 or 98 cents plus tax??).   The art work on the originals was slightly different also…the were called Cello Editions.  I can recall standing in front of the display of books and looking at all the covers…wondering which book I should buy next…decisions…decisions.

I finished the first book…I can see why the series first captured my attention…there is some kind of calamity or adventure in every chapter…it is a page turner…and leaves you hanging at the end of the book so that you will buy the next book in the series.

The original author (Julie Campbell Tatham)  of this series wrote just the first six books and after that many different ghost writers took over for the publishing company and wrote under the pseudonym Kathryn Kenny …it seems they found that young readers were buying their books and they wanted to continue after the original author stopped writing.

So now I am exploring books from my youth.

  1. Oh how fun! My late mom grew up in an orphanage and loved childhood mysteries. She would read under the sheets with a flashlight when she was supposed to be asleep!
Books like these bring back fond memories for me and the illustrations on the covers have always been appealing. Enjoy!

  2. I think your bro is a grandpa! I read Nancy Drew and Cherry Ames, who was my favorite. Cherry Ames was my favorite. Maybe I should track one down and bring back the memory of a hot summer day devouring a book in my grandma's hammock by the cornfield. Not a bad idea!

  7. I don't know If I read Trixie Belden, but did read some Nancy Drew, and probably more Hardy Boys. There were also some books by an English writer, Enid Blyton, that I found really good. I should look and see if I kept any of them.

  8. Never read these, but I remember going to Woolworth's. The one downtown Mpls had a pretty good sized cafe inside, if I remember correctly. Woolworth's was packed to the brim with all kinds of inexpensive goodies and toys kids would like and a ton of penny candy so you didn't mind going with Mom to shop there--LOL! When I was older it was the craft and art stuff that I would zero in on. Took me back, too. ;)

  10. I made the decision to bring to the new place only the books that my brothers had read. They had their names in them..Roy Rogers was a common one for them. I read books for the school book club that were about racing horses and archeology.

  11. I learned a couple of years ago, when we were discussing childhood favourites on one of the groups I'm on over on Goodreads, that many of the books I read as a child weren't as well known in the US and Canada as they were here in the UK, and vice-versa. So I've been revisiting some old favourites of my own, but also started investigating old favourites of friends I didn't know to read at the time. Good thing I read a lot, because all this combined with trying to read newer releases requires a lot of reading time... As it is I'm not getting to even half the books I'd like to.

  14. I loved the Trixie Belden books when I was young. Also Nancy Drew. I got all mine at the library mobile that visited our area every two weeks cause I never got to the city library. If it wasn't for the mobile I never would have gotten books to read. hugs, lj

  16. Wonderful for you to go back and read these books again . I didn't do much book reading as a youngster I was to busy watching , sketching and enjoying nature and our farm animals . I do however have two favorite books from when I was about 10 and they are Charlotte's web which I have the original still and Flowers for Algernon . I now enjoy books of documented ghost stories By Barbra Smith a Canadian author and any British mystery books as well as Books by Fern Michaels and Debbie Macomber . Thanks for sharing , have a good weekend !

  18. I never heard of of those books but what a great idea! I still own lots of books I read as a child and yes, I do still read them. I think there’s an art in writing a successful children’s book: a really good one can be read by all ages.
    Hope you enjoy your reading.

  20. Funny, I am re-reading "A Wrinkle in Time" because of the movie, and I had forgotten the story completely. It's like the first time with little memory clouds appearing now and then. :-)
