I like farm fresh eggs. Alway have probably always will. Especially brown eggs, they are my favorite. I used to help with the chicken chores, I didn’t mind it. I “gathered eggs” …Far Guy helped me once he “picked up eggs.”
Last summer some of my great nieces got chickens. They are really good chicken farmers…and hope to expand their coop and maybe even build a barn and get some goats and make their own soap. I am not sure their parents know of this “plan.”
Two of the girls and one of their favorite chickens. This may be Fern…or Olive or Ponderosa Pine or I forget…
This girl loves her chickens and her chickens love her.
All 16 of the chickens are very tame, they all have names. They rub against your legs as you walk through their area.
This is Claire the biggest fattest largest chicken they have. She also lays the largest eggs.
Some of them even lay double yolks. I cannot eat eggs everyday, Far Guy eats eggs every other day.
Nothing better than fresh non grocery store eggs. The price was $2.30 a dozen but we always pay $2.50…young entrepreneurs should always be encouraged. What is the going price for eggs in your area? Have you met the chickens that lay your eggs?
I too love farm fresh eggs but rarely am able to get them. Since we rarely eat eggs I usually buy only a half dozen and they sell for $.59. I think a dozen sells for $1.75 to $2.00 a dozen here.
ReplyDeleteYour blog started my day with a smile.
ReplyDeleteWhat cute little chicken farmers. That is a good price for farm fresh eggs. Eggs at the farmer's market here are $4.50 - $5.00 a dozen. Those hens are pretty too.
ReplyDeleteI agree, a happy post. I wish your great-nieces much success in their chicken farming.
ReplyDeleteUnder $2.00 a dozen at the commissary. Love farm fresh eggs, can sometimes get them from a friend.
ReplyDeleteBackyard chicken coops are allowed in my town (no roosters) and many people have them.
ReplyDeleteGoing price for my farm-freesh brown and green eggs is....free! I have a colleague who gives them to me. The girls are wearing my FAVORITE "non-work this, time of year' color!!! And how cool are the names of their chickens!!!
ReplyDeleteEggs here vary all over the ballpark in price... cheapest at Aldi $.60/ doz.. The farmers' markets are closed for the season but the eggs were about $3.00/ doz.
ReplyDeleteYay for your nieces, may their egg business prosper!!!
ReplyDeleteHere we can free range them all year, sure there are times when there is some snow on the ground, and some winters not, but they mostly have access to grass all year round. Of course their area needs to be big enough that the don't destroy the grass, and ours is. Animals that are grass fed have higher amounts of CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) and that is what you want. Not really sure what the eggs from the caged chickens cost, I think between $2 and $3 here in Canada. Sometimes I see them on sale in the flyers for $1.99. I see some people locally selling theirs for $3.50 still, which is a ridiculously low price in my opinion. We sell ours at the farmers market for $5.50 a dozen, and for $5 from the house, although we don't sell too many that way. Others as the markets are selling them for $6 and even more I've heard. We don't buy organic feed but do pay more for a non GMO feed (no corn or soy). We figure our time is money, and if you factor in the daily work, the trips for feed, the cleaning out of the coops, fixing fences after the coyotes have breached them, etc, building of a new coop, it adds up to a lot of time. Eggs are pretty well considered the perfect protein, and are such a steal compared to buying meat, ounce for ounce. Some of the prices people here have quoted seem ridiculously low. Buying eggs for $.60 dozen? You have to wonder what those chickens are being fed.
I like these chicken farmers! It's not just farm fresh it's free range that I like. That way you avoid all the gross feed chickens are given and they taste like a real chicken
ReplyDeleteFarm eggs are the best! They are $4 a dozen here. That would be about $3 USD
ReplyDeleteSweet photos of the girls and their chickens!
ReplyDeleteWe drive out to a farm to buy our eggs and pay 2.50 a dozen for extra large size. I've used those large eggs for so many years I think my baking would turn out quite differently if I had to use what the store calls "large".
ReplyDeleteMy chickens get to run all over the farm during the day, as they are protected by Bess the Maremma. I have all different breeds, as I like lots of variety! I charge $3.00 a dozen, but mostly share them with my friends, Bess and my border collies Scout and Kelsey, and I get some too! Lately I have been making poached eggs for the dogs and me. I give my chickens sunflower seeds as a treat every day.
ReplyDeleteMy sister has about 4 chickens, and if I lived in the same ()*&*T state I could likely get them for free (or exchange!). She did also manage to pick up an antique gadget that tells you if the eggs are small, med, large or extra large. She loves those chickens, and they follow us around the yard as we visit the donkeys or gaze at the cows. It's only a small ranch, but she loves that life!
ReplyDeleteMy daughters were the same way with our chickens, carrying them around and such. No chickens now and we pay $2 for farm eggs. Or I should say, did pay. About a month ago our farmer's hen got wiped about by an animal, all 30 of them. She won't be replacing them until spring. It's hard to eat store-bought after you've had the real thing.
ReplyDelete$2.50 per dozen for farm fresh eggs!
ReplyDeleteWow, look at all those colors of eggs. That is a neat thing for those girls to do together and your get fresh eggs. I remember years ago when Martha Stewart was promoting the hens with different colored eggs.
ReplyDeleteGood for those girls! Young entrepreneurs for sure! I buy organic at Walmart.
