We have been walking on the deer trails in the afternoon, the trails in the woods are not icy like the road is. Our property is posted so we feel safe wandering out on our own property during the day. Deer Hunting ends this weekend. The main hunting area that my family uses is way north of our property. Three deer have been harvested up there.
It is very quiet in the woods. No birds or squirrels except near our home. It is good exercise for a Border Collie’s nose…he often has to be called back to the main trail. His hearing is getting worse…and sometimes he thinks he is the leader and picks a more brushy trail.
There are a few widowmakers hanging near the trails. (The branch stuck up in a tree.)
These are spots where deer have bedded down for the night. There were three spots in this area. Probably a doe and two fawns or maybe the triplet fawns.
And deer sign is all along the trail. ( Just incase you city folk don’t know what deer poop looks like.)
I take my small fit in your pocket camera. I must have it on a setting to take square photos!
It snowed again after our walk yesterday. But next week it may warm up! It isn’t so bad, there are no skeeters, ticks, flies or snakes.
Wonderful time to walk in the woods...thank you for taking us with you. I think Annie has hearing problems too...because once she sees me she comes running but before that I could be standing behind her and she doesn't react. I think the deer here bed down in my yard! They love to bed down in my lilies and other flower beds....I give up! The deer here run the neighborhood. No snow here but 36 this morning...60 and sun later.
ReplyDeleteI love walking in the woods; especially at this time of year - no ticks and skeeters. Deer hunting is still in full swing down here so no woods for me right now. No snow here yet, but they are saying snow flurries today.
ReplyDeleteI hope that the weather stays nice for you and warms up a bit. We've got rain for today, of course, since it's my hiking day! :-)
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy snow in other folks blogs.
ReplyDeleteWonderful walk , like we went with you .
ReplyDeleteMilk duds ...that is our term for deer poop.
Watch out for the poop and hopefully the deer ticks are hybernating or moving wayyyy slow! I hope the Momma and triplets are taking up hiding in your neck of the woods.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing good about winter is the loss of skeeters, ticks, spiders and snakes!! I love walks on the property.
ReplyDeleteOne good thing about snow - no more ticks!
ReplyDeleteBasically city girl--but with country relatives and a little bit of personal experience in Wisconsin. Been a long time since I've seen deer poop--LOL! ;) Looks like such a nice walk. You are brave to be out while it is deer hunting season--even on your own land. Was too scary for me when we lived in the country in Wisconsin. The sound og gun shots kept me close to home. ;)
ReplyDeleteYou have the same amount of snow that we got last week. Ours is long gone though. Your woods look different to ours, with smaller trees and different varieties. Our dogs would have loved it too.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't Chance roll in the deer poop? It's Bob's favorite thing in the world. And it stinks like nothing else! Fortunately we don't have deer in the yard where we live now. Except for that, I miss seeing them.
ReplyDeleteNo Chance does not roll in the deer poop, he knows it is not allowed. He did a few times as a pup and got a harsh scolding and a cold bath...so he leaves it alone now:)
DeleteThe air is crisp and insects just don't like that. I don't miss the beetles and other bugs. The paths are fun to see and walk. We have a couple of places along the lake that might be worth checking out. Our roads that weave in an out of the lake are closer to the lake that one would think. The leaves have dropped and we can see a whole different world.
ReplyDeleteLovely snowy scenes! Our mountains are getting snow right now. I'm ready for some skiing! :)
ReplyDeleteWell I did branch out a few years from upland gamed hunting to bow hunting here. Turned out the deer were quite safe from my efforts. With some effort I could have become rich and famous writing about my deer hunting misadventures. :)
ReplyDeleteA lovely walk in the snowy woods!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to follow game trails. they always tell a good story.
ReplyDeleteNice, crisp, DRY weather is great for walking. Your deer trails make it interesting.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had a snow yet. May have one this weekend. We have the cold temperatures...29 degrees this morning. We rarely have an entire day below zero even in the coldest of the winter. Tom and I took a walk at Charleston Falls two days ago. We saw a few butterflies.
