I have a hopeless garden out in front of the patio. It was a miserable failure this past summer. Years ago it was a Daylily Garden and then believe it or not one year they froze out.
This was it on its best day this summer. PATHETIC The bird feeders hang directly above this garden.
The last day of August it should have looked better than this. I know I have lots of junk in there…solar lights are my weakness. I love seeing all the lights at night. This garden did not lack for water or fertilizer. The Pansies are the only flowers that looked good and the tree rats cute little squirrels ate some of them.
I have slowly moved a few decorations out. Yesterday after a shopping trip for a few more solar lights I cleaned and repaired the ones that worked and cleaned up this garden for winter. Most of the lights will get covered with snow but sunny days the snow will melt and the lights will shine again.
After
Next year I may change my flower shopping list to : Impatiens, Coleus and Pansies.
If I couldn’t control my OCD this garden would have the same kind of solar lights evenly spaced…instead it is just a mishmash of lights styles and colors placed haphazardly throughout….perhaps I should call it a colorful patchwork!
I have enough solar lights purchased for next spring…hard to pass up a sale. For now I tucked them and extra parts that are still good in a file cabinet in my garage.
I could not bring myself to uproot the Pansies. They will bloom a few more days until a really hard frost.
You are too hard on yourself! But I do think that there are years that are better than others in the growing arena. My zinnias got some disease or bug and all died out this year! That has never happened before....zinnias are so hardy but evidently I do not have a green thumb at all. I got some solar lights and need to put them out for this winter.
ReplyDeleteI do love than pansy photo. Our neighbor has solar lights and I enjoy them so much. Hope you have a good week.
ReplyDeleteI put solar lights in my garden plot this year, but I have to walk out there to see them. I kind of like your garden, but you are right: you need new plants to make your garden prettier. Love the pansy, though. Thanks for leaving it in the ground for now. :-)
ReplyDeletePansies are quiet beauties in any garden. They huddle near the ground and don't scream for attention. I love them!
ReplyDeletePretty pansy. My mother always had them in her garden.
ReplyDeleteThere are some pathetic looking flower beds here because of the dry ground. The pansies sure are pretty. I'm probably the only person on earth who can not grow pansies. ??
ReplyDeleteMy sidewalk garden is a mess. Full of grass and more grass. I have finally decided enough is enough...my hands and fingers won't let me keep weeding like it needs anymore. So I am going to rip it all up and fill it with gravel and my 50 year old peonies (they get to stay) a bench or two and be done!
ReplyDeleteI love your solar lights! Well, and all your various do-dads. No harm in trying something different next year, but I'm sure some years are better than others regardless. The geraniums and marigolds did the best in my planters so I will try them again next year for sure. The solar lights in the snow--now I keep trying to picture that. Sounds so cool! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the solar lights. Pansies are one of my favorites too!
ReplyDeleteSome, times tHe only kind thing To do with a flower bed is tO take it out and start over again. I think I'll do that with one of my junipers.
ReplyDeleteIt's disappointing when things don't look the way we picture them in our head. Anyway, at this time of the year flowers and shrubs look pretty awful. Thankfully Spring brings new enthusiasm or we'd all give up gardening.
ReplyDeleteThe only time I've taken up a gun to kill something was when I saw a rabbit sitting in the galvanized wash tub eating my pansies. That was the last time it ever ate my pansies. My opinion about squirrels is about the same.
ReplyDeleteMaybe go with begonias, the little ones called wax begonias, instead of impatiens. Begonias do better in sun and shade and don't need watering as much as impatiens.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe the daylilies didn't make it. So sad...they are my favorite! Maybe next year's flowers can include some that aren't so tasty to your local friendly "tree rats."
