Wistful Wednesday : Old Car

The old cars are the best cars.  Remember when the new models came out and you could tell the Fords from the Buicks from Chevrolet?

Then there were the oddball cars… Edsel, Packard, Nash Ramblers, Studebacker, Hudson…and of course Desoto.

The pastel colored car…this one was Mint Green…although Far Guy called it Willow Green.

Last winter we found a drawing that someone did and it made us both chuckle.  Oh the “stuff” we keep!

Desoto drawing

1959 Desoto Stationwagon with pushbutton drive and an add on air conditioner that sat on the floor in the middle of the front seat.  No sitting next to a beau unless you wanted to put your feet up on that air conditioner unit.

Far Guy shared this story with the carving group last week

“It was winter, we were bored.  Barry and someone else got on the roof of the old Desoto, I headed out to the old fairgrounds and sped around the track, sliding around the corners.  Cruised Main and then out to Crocus…got out and no one was on top of the car. I wondered what the heck, where did they fall off at?  They could have been way back at the fairgrounds.   I turned around to go and find them and here they came walking down the road apparently a low branch knocked them off.  There were other people on top of that car but the only one I can recall is Barry. I was not all alone in the car either, someone was with me…but who?”

I asked him who drew the picture.  He says “Mark.”  Could be it is not signed …

  3. So funny! When I was little, we had a big black Desoto with the big fins and yes, those push button controls.
Must have been an off-beat neighborhood because now that I think of it, the guy next door had an Edsel

  4. I love all those old classic cars. They were so well built back then. Remember the metal dashboard you could stick magnetic objects on? Those were the days. Thank for the trip down memory lane.

  6. Yes, I sure remember those old cars. I think a 1957 Chevy was my favorite, it was called a "heavy Chevy" for some reason. :-)

  9. There weren't so many models back then and yes they wee easy to tell apart. I did many crazy things but I don't think I road on the top of the car.

  10. Yep. I love the old cars too. I'm glad everyone returned in one piece from that little excursion. A young man was just killed here in Seattle when he was hanging out a window during a joy ride.

  11. Oh that is so neat that you have a picture of a 1959. I love old cars too. They dont make them like that anymore but sounds like it had fancy stuff like a pushbutton drive? :)

  12. Old cars are definitely the best! WHY didn't we keep our '57 Chevy?

  13. Far Guy's story is something! Didn't we do crazy things back then! Daddy used to buy a new Desoto every year. He then bought an Edsel the first year they were made. His brother, Uncle Elmer had a new gold Studebacker.

  14. Cars and their names completely confuse me today. Back when I was a teen, knowing about cars was supposed to make a girl attractive to boys. I decided if that was what it took, I didn't want a boyfriend. Of course, I did want a boyfriend but not THAT much.

  15. Back then they looked like space ships with the tail lights....like they might take off and fly at any moment...evidently Far Guy's car did! LOL!
