The little Redpolls are back. They are about twenty days later this year. I am not certain what moves them from place to place….food, weather, boredom?
They are the only birds we have that attack a thistle feeder like there is no tomorrow. (The Goldfinches will give them a run for their seeds later in the spring.) I cleaned out their feeder really good, we also have a hanging thistle feeder sock that the squirrels attacked, although my sewing skills suck I can wield a needle and thread good enough to patch a feeder sock. I have purchasd a replacement and will not be patching that one again…there is a limit to my sewing skills.
Chance thought it was a gold mine when I dumped the feeder out in the snowbank to clean it. He is now tracking in seeds, some of which hang onto his chin hairs and find their way into his water dish…silly dog.
Everything is early here. What a crazy winter.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to put out all my feeders again this year. Silly Chance!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think Chance actually wanted to eat the seed, did he? Just wanted to find out what it was. I also meant to tell you how much I like your new header. :-)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we have redpolls, what cute birds!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome I love it when spring birds return . The RedPolls are soo pretty . Our Robins , Grackles , Red wing blackbirds and Morning Doves have returned so nice to see and hear them again . Lovely photo. It has been like spring here already to no snow never got much to begin with this year green grass spring flowers starting to grow and thunderstorms . Thanks for sharing , Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteThis winter is definitely full of surprises!!! So happy to see the Redpolls are back!! Spring is coming:)

Been one crazy winter. ;)
ReplyDeleteWe had very few red polls this winter. They tend to be up and down in numbers.
ReplyDeleteOur winter was about 4 week long this year.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I've ever seen a redpoll. I will have to keep an eye out for them. I think it's interesting that you know how many days late they are too. It adds a sense of rhythm to nature. I did spot an adult bald eagle just sitting in a nearby tree yesterday...in a tree where I've never spotted a bald eagle before.
ReplyDeleteI echo the crazy winter theme. We got dumped on with 5" of snow yesterday. Thankfully it is melting today. I'm not sure if I've seen a red poll here.
ReplyDeleteI get seeds all over the kitchen when I refill my socks. I need more seed. I have been seeing geese fly over headed north that are not Canada geese. They are doing some serious flying in large populations.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have red polls here. Pretty birds.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the birds and Chance!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty bird!
ReplyDeleteCute birds! Bracken eats birdseed, even whole sunflower seeds, given any chance to do so. Don't know if he can digest them though.
ReplyDeleteCora needs to 'get a life' LOL! I love the redpolls. I've never even heard of them before. Precious little birds! Are you on FB? There was a video of someone who used a slinky around their bird feeder polls and the squirrels couldn't climb it! Too funny!
