We did an inventory of the deep freeze and the fridge freezer. We have enough soups, chili, gumbo and lasagna frozen so we could both eat for the next 21 days without cooking. Plus we have other stuff in there that needs to be used up, berries and vegetables…oh and a nice assortment of meat…flat bread, lefsa, pumpkin and banana bread….even some caramel rolls to round out the stash.
I now have a list on the fridge so we can update it as food is used. If we remember. Our goal is to use it up before it warms up…so we can defrost the deep freeze.
I recall that my maternal grandparents who went through the depression years…their TWO deep freezers were always filled to the brim….everytime Grandma sent you for something you had to dig for it. I like going to get Peach Pie…or Apple…neither of which are in our freezer.
The Shiny Brites are put away, the tree waited in its bag until our son in law Handy Andy and daughter Jen could help…it was easy for them to wrangle it into it’s storage spot.
My other projects have been on hold after the Shiny Brite tree de decorating. I need to get my butt in gear.
Chance is in a “mood” he misses his friends. He is sassy and vocal and wants either attention or treats. He is being weaned from higher calorie treats and gets a couple of frozen blueberries. He used to eat raw carrots and apples when he was a pup…now he just spits them out. Far Guy will make pumpkin treats for him this week…rice flour, egg, dry milk and pumpkin.
That's a lot of good sounding meals in the freezer. Wish that I could say the same for our freezer.
ReplyDeleteMy freezer is finally emptying out. There are a few containers of suspect veggies - they may go by the wayside. I think there is one steak, one hunk of some cut of lamb and a chicken breast. Not much, eh?! I LOVE the idea of an inventory list. When my freezer begins to fill back up, I think it might be very interesting to start using some sort of dated list as I load it up.
ReplyDeleteChance needs a live-in friend!
We used to have a vertical freezer which made it easier to find stuff. Now we have a chest freezer and Richard keeps it full to the brim. I wonder what freeze-dried mummified things might be lurking in the bottom but I make no attempt to find out. Can appreciate the photo of the squirrel eating the suet. Richard keeps a .22 by the back door for such eventualities.
ReplyDeleteMy freezer is about half full. I keep a list on the fridge of everything that is in it. I use that list to plan my weekly menus. Sounds like Chance need a buddy.
ReplyDeleteMy parents had a chest type freezer that was always filled to the brim. I used to mine in there for ice cream. Squirrels are definitely acrobats, aren't they? :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat Grandma and Grandpa always had a house FULL of people to feed. Easters and Christmases with 30+ people coming and going. I too right now have 2 chest freezers full of food that I need to start using... Just bought a 1/2 a pig too...oy veh!!!
ReplyDeleteThose dog treats sound good with the pumpkin in them. And farewell to the Shiny Brites for another year. Interesting though, my chore for later today is to inventory my pantry and freezer. Must be that time of year. I want to plan meals, but I think I want to inventory to see how I did with winter prep last fall. have a great day.
ReplyDeleteI'd say you are all set for some lazy days of no cooking! Bob says she is jealous of the homemade treats but hold the blueberries. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love your squirrel photo! I really like squirrels!
ReplyDeleteMy mom had two deep chest freezers - one in the porch, one in the garage, and they rarely were completely empty. Even though I live in town, I have an upright freezer in the garage. Sure is nice to "shop" from the freezer and to stock it when prices are lower.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea to inventory the freezer! Since my freezer went to "freezer heaven" recently I only have the one with the fridge. Much easier to see what is in there. I don't think I will get another big freezer!
ReplyDeleteI gave Barney raw carrot sticks and he spat them out. He knew he could get cooked carrots from soup or peanut butter on bread. Our old International Harvester freezer was always full when I was a young kid. When we bought the newer kind of freezer while on the farm the walls of it seems to be too thin to work. That old freezer actually reminded me of a tractor. Back to now, our new place has a fridge with a pull out freezer at the bottom. We bought it from the owners and may take our other refrigerator with us. Never have I owned a freezer even though we needed one.
ReplyDeleteYour freezer is worse than mine. However, it's the other stuff that we're overrun with. I counted the other day and the MM has soup for the next 71 days. We don't eat soup every day. Other things are stocked in over supply too.
ReplyDeleteWow!! You have a LOT of food in your freezer. But no pie. Mine neither. If there was one I'd bake it for supper, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteI should have attacked some projects today but instead I went to 2 thrift stores. DH drove me and patiently waited while I browsed. He was so happy he had an excuse to drive the 4X4 pick up he bought recently. With the streets a mess after our ridiculous amount of snow most people stayed off the roads.
Great idea to put a list on the freezer! Duh! I've been doing the same thing...trying to eat from the freezer so I can clear it out. I just have a little one out in the garage now but on the farm I had the huge long one that you could fall in if you weren't careful!
ReplyDeleteKeeping extra meals in the freezer too long wouldn't be an issue here. Every time it came to making a meal I'd be thinking 'why cook when I can just thaw out something ready made'.
ReplyDeleteWe have four freezers and two fridge freezers. One freezer is dog food. Two are all fruit, and the last, smallest one is a mixture of everything. No ready made meals in our freezers, darn! We just keep eating the leftovers until they are done because like I already said, why cook when there is something already made.
I'm impressed with the contents of your freezer. We tend to just eat leftovers a second night instead of saving anything. Not having to cook for 21 days sounds great!
ReplyDeleteAh...our dog is on the blueberry regimen, too. Vet says it is good for her memory. We can only hope. I guess any little bit helps :)
