Back to school

Today is the day that all the kids go back to school in Minnesota.  We did some errands yesterday and Wally World was filled with kids and Moms in the final day of back to school frenzy.
I remember those days…trying to get the girls to settle down at night and go to sleep when it was still daylight…clothing set out for the next morning and backpacks filled with school supplies.  New shoes ready to be worn.
Jen and Trica 1983
1983 Jennifer and Trica in Moorhead Minnesota.
They were up before the alarm and sitting at the table dressed and ready to go in no time…but would barely touch their breakfast.  Too excited to find out who was in their class.  The big question would be Hot Lunch or Bag Lunch…they both had likes and dislikes with school food, but both liked Pizza Day which was usually a Friday.
Trica and jen off to school 1983
Off to school…they were old enough to go by themselves we lived just a block and a half from the school.  Trica in 6th Grade, she had a Mr Larson for a teacher and Jennifer off to Second Grade…where her teacher was…??? a lady by the name of…??  See I must be getting old…that brain cell that used to know that name has died. Well that was 33 years ago. Jen will remember and leave me a comment.  It was Mrs. Robertsdahl...I had to look it up!

There was to be no horsing around after school, they were to come home, change clothes, have a snack and then they could go back outside and play with friends (with permission) or do homework.

  3. Ahhh the memories! Those brain cells are amazing - 33 years later look at all the details you remember.

  5. I can't remember if I felt excited about, or dreaded, the first day of school, which is also the first day after Labour (eh) Day here. Probably excited in the younger years and dreading it in the later.

  6. It wasn't till my senior year in 1968 that the girls were allowed to wear jeans. We only had a designated amount of "slack" days on home game football days and they had to be slacks/dress pants, no jeans. Girls had to wear skirts or dresses. Fridley High was strict! This was the age of miniskirts and long hair--so teachers walked around with rulers. They could stop girls anywhere and we had to drop to our knees. If your skirt was more than two inches off the floor you were sent home. They measured the boy's hair, too. Couldn't come below their collar or be longer than two inches anywhere on their head. (Yes, collar--t-shirts were not allowed for any of us, either.) Several girls protested by wearing granny skirts and were sent home for being too distracting. What a time! I was so upset I didn't own a granny skirt at the time.

But I loved school. I am not a crier, but I cried in the hallway after graduation. Ah! School days. :)

  9. Who would have thought that 1983 would have been the good ole days. The story made me stop and think what was going on in my life at the time.

  10. School has been part of my life for almost 60 years so by the time I retired my body clock seemed to be permanently set to that schedule. So many memories, from my own school days, then from teaching, then my children's , then more teaching. Now my daughter sends me the first day of school picture each year of my grandsons, which made me smile this morning. I love September!

  11. The two grands that live here were off to their first day this morning. They only had a half day and they came home smiling so that's a good omen. I used to love going back to school. Home was so boring because we had no close neighbours and my brothers were older and I was on my own a lot.

  12. I love September, and the advent of the school year! After years of going to school, University, and teaching, the year always starts in September. School started today (Sep. 6) and just passing the schools in my car got me thinking and remembering!

  13. You had a good routine to take photos at the beginning of every year. My Mom took photos until I was in about gr 5.

  14. Our two kids walked to school too, about three blocks. We had the same rules.
Lots more kids went back to school around here today too. Some districts are waiting until tomorrow.

  16. Going back to school in the UK is not the huge thing it seems to be in the US or Europe.
As far as I recall we just went back to school. Very dull. And all the schools I went to had uniforms which you had to wear or you'd get sent home which was not a good thing. At boarding school we changed into "home clothes" at tea time but mostly we just wore the (usually dreadful) uniform.
I did get into trouble one summer for having a uniform dress that was very short… but that was because I had grown so much since the previous year and my mother couldn't afford new dresses for me. We were supposed to have 4: 3 for every day and 1 for best. I still have long legs but no-one cares how long or short my skirts are any more - except me.
