Wistful Wednesday: School Days 1928

I discovered this photo in Skinnies album.

Skinnie (Aunt Frances) was one of the teachers.

That is Aunt Frances on the far left.

The upper mark is Far Guy’s Dad Marvin.  The lower mark is Uncle Jimmy because he looks just like his son Jay.

Far Guy and I looked over the photo for Uncle Ron with no clear answer.  Perhaps he is in the back row the second boy from Aunt Francis.  OR maybe he was sick that day.

I believe this photo was taken in the spring of 1928.  Marvin would have been 13, Ron 10 and Jimmy 6. It was taken at the school in Osage….which later became the Community Center…which was later torn down to make room for the new Baptist Church later named Community Church.

I can still see how wonderful the building looked when Osage celebrated the Centennial…it was painted and served  the community well, its real wood floors were warped with age and the out house was out back.

  1. All the girls have exactly the same haIrcut, even the "big girls" in the back row who have curled theirs. Interesting to see the boy in the wheelchair as children with handicaps were mostly hidden away in those years.

  2. I noticed the boy in the wheelchair immediately. Does anyone know anything about him?

  3. That is quite a crowd of less than happy looking kids - no wonder your aunt skinny was skinny!

  5. Fascinating old photo. The kid's clothes (obviously farm kids) and the girl's hairstyle. Many of them had the same stylist;-)!

  6. Interesting comment from Karen about 'farm kids'. You are probably right—they most likely were. But looking at this with a wider perspective, most people were living and working on farms at that time. And being in the city did not necessarily connote wealth and better style. Good fodder for discussion! I do love these glimpses of the past that you give us!

  7. I was fascinated by the boy in the wheelchair, too. Made me think of polio right away.
Pretty good ratio of students to teachers. When I was in school we had over 30 kids in a class with one teacher. (Baby boom time.)

  8. Quite an age range in the students. I can guarantee those two teachers were busy! I would bet they taught all grades 1st - 12th grades.

  9. Great photo showing the styles of that age maybe not styles but how they lived and what they did.

  10. Loved how the kids were arranged by height with the tallest in the middle. Marvin was one of the three tallest.Love the little kiddo looking down in the front row. The fellow in the wheelchair looks like he has no sock on his right foot and a slip on shoe/slipper. Big crowd for two teachers!

  11. A very interesting picture. I also enjoyed all the comments about it as well. Things I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. :-)

  12. That's a neat photo. The children do all look very serious.

  13. Sometimes I think they really had it better back in those days. No news of the outside world much which we have nowadays on an hourly or minute by minute basis if we wish. FB is bad enough but it's a big world and there is too much happening so I would like to live back then when they only had to worry about their own little community and help each other. The world is too overwhelming!
