Trillium and Dame’s Rocket

The Trillium has faded to pink.  They start out white and then turn pink and fade away….the whole plant dissapears until next year.  I have read that it can take up to ten years for the seeds to grow to make new rhizomes…and that the Trillium is one of the only plants that changes color as it blooms.

It was a busy week.  I spent three afternoons this week out and about.  One day going to garage sales with Far Guy, one day in Detroit Lakes with Jen and one day out just for me.  The day in DL with Jen; we spent some time in the cemetery, the thrift shop, JC Penneys, a bakery and driving around until we decided to walk in Wally World.

The Dame’s Rocket was very pretty this year.  Hesperis matronalis is it’s real name.  It can be easily confused with Phox…but Dame’s Rocket has four petals that make up the flower and Phlox has five.

  2. It does look a lot like phlox. We don't have Dame's Rocket around here, so I couldn't get it mixed up. Pretty color, my favorite. :-)

  3. Love the horticulture lessons. I wish they stuck longer than they do. I did manage to spot a white trillium a while back. At least I will know where to find them again next summer.

  4. I love the rocket, it grows wild along the railway tracks (among other places) here. The smell is wonderful. They are long finished as are the trilliums.

  8. Thanks for telling the difference. I just now found out I also have Dame's Rocket in my yard. Have you ever been to the old Akeley School? That is an interesting day of "rummaging". Enjoy your weekend!!

  11. I didn't know that about the color change of trillium.

    This is for Far Guy:

The latest issue of Better Homes and Gardens has a one page article that talks about TN, calls it that too and explains what is thought that causes it. This article is a good sign that TN is beginning to get recognized by the general public. I was glad to read it. Maybe you can get a look at this. It is quite accurate I thought.

  13. Dame's Rocket is so pretty but I've read that it can become invasive. I see clumps of it mostly in neglected areas and it makes a nice splash of colour.

  16. I'm glad that your week wasn't so busy that you didn't have time to tell us about a couple of flowers.

  17. We enjoyed Trillium at Nalley Valley. I don't think I've ever seen the Dame's Rocket. Whenever I am riding along in the countryside and see wildflowers, I think of you. Your photos are so nice and I love your header photos.
