Flag Day

Seems to me that many people forget about Flag Day…that is today June 14.
Flag
We fly the American Flag on Far Guy’s garage.

When I was in fifth and sixth grade, the students put up the flag in the morning and took it down at the end of the school day.  It was then that I learned about the flag and how it should never touch the ground and how to fold it properly.

I wonder do kids in school learn hands on like that now or do they just read about it in a book?

When Flag Day would fall on a day that the museum was open, I would have old soldiers  from the American Legion come over and hold a flag folding ceremony.

Do you know that each fold means something?  I did but that is probably only becauseI am an avid reader and I read about it someplace!

  6. When I was younger (but still an adult), we would have a party on Flag Day. Today I don't see anything about it except for your reminder. Thank you for being there! :-)

  7. THANK YOU for posting the link about the flag-folding! That is very informative and interesting. Part of our country's problem is we have departed from ceremonies like you mentioned with the students raising and lowering the flag each day. Our school did that, too as well as everyone saying the Pledge of Allegiance at the same time while we were led over the PA system by the principal or someone in leadership. We need to pray that someone is stepping up to the plate to take our places in remembrance of these things. However, we do have some wonderful young Christian families in our community which gives great hope for the future.

  9. If you believe only what you see on TV you think our children are not learning anything. I do hope behind all the nonsense going on in the political world that parents and schools are continuing to teach patriotism but I don't know that.

  10. No, I didn't know the folds each meant something. Only knew the flag wasn't supposed to touch the ground. Our maintenance people at the schools took care of the flag. I remember watching him through the window as he lowered the flag to half mast when Kennedy was shot but we hadn't heard the announcement yet. That's what I remember--they came over the intercom to tell us the president had been shot as the maintenance man was walking away from the flag pole looking crushed and wiping his eyes.

  12. My flag is out this morning.

Anymore, I think most of the flag-raising at schools is done by the custodian.

  13. I remember learning about flag etiquette in Girl Scouts. At camp we always began and ended the day with a flag ceremony.

  14. Only the boys were allowed to put up the flag and take it down when I was in grade school. Was it because girls weren't smart enough? :(

  17. Is flag day for a specific reason? Other than showing the flag, that is.

Because I live on the border between Wales and England I often see Welsh flags displayed prominently and English flags for football matches. I have no ideas if people actually have a meaningful way of folding their flags.

  18. Happy Flag Day! My flag has been up and down today. I don't have an all-weather flag so I had to take it down when it started raining. I did know that the fold have meanings because I've attended flag ceremonies where the flag, the colrs and the folds are discussed.

  20. We also took the flag down after school and put it up before school At times we all stood to raise or lower the flag. We all had turns to do the flag.

  21. Oh, I didn't notice that today is flag day. I might have put out our flag. Too late now.
My grandson learns proper flag etiquette in Scouts. I did not know each fold means something. I'll have to ask him if he knows that.

  24. My grandson was a Boy Scout so we know a lot about the flag. Today we flew our flag proudly. But it was noted that many flags were flying half-mast to honor those who died in Orlando. It seems we are flying the flag more at half mast than we used to. I wish it was preserved for a cherished few. But then I understand!! Really, I do!
