Smoke and Fires

We are supposed to get some much needed rain this week.  It is very dry and our Fire Danger is Very High according to Smokey Bear in Park Rapids.

There was a fire at the edge of town last week that was quickly put out…the water bombers and flame retardant dumping planes and helicopters assisted.

Luckily a Minnesota Incident Command Team had just finished up at a fire near Staples when the Lake Hattie fire broke out.  They set up at the Lake George Fire Hall.  Lake George’s Fire Trucks were parked outside to enable the use of the Fire Hall for a command center.

See that Semi Trailer?  It is full of food and supplies.

Smoky areas near Kabekona Corners

Smoke from the fires hung heavy in the air.  On Saturday we drove out of it and into sunshine and blue skies…Sunday there was no relief from the smoke.

Road on the prairie

On Sunday as we neared home, our Smoky Hills were indeed smoky.  What wasn’t smoky was dusty from the field work.

My eye balls are doing their usual spring itch, eye drops help.

  1. I'll be happy to send you some of our rain. Seems it has been raining at least twice a week since April 1st. We are expecting rain at least 3 times this week. :(

  3. I am hoping for plenty of rain for you and the entire Alberta province as well. It does look smoky and that would bother my eyes and sinuses, for sure.

  4. I'm sure you've heard about the Fort McMurray fire, which have been raging in Canada. It seems to be the way things are going this spring. Such devastation and loss! A timely topic, Far Side.

  6. It does look smokey in that photo. Take care. We've had some rain on the burnt land across the street, so I'm hoping the smoke smell goes away. My car still smells. Makes me wonder how many goslings didn't make it out of there in time.

  14. I may have asked you before but do you ever use Erythromycin Eye Antibiotic? My ophthalmologist keeps a refillable prescription for me to use as needed during these seasons. It really helps.

  18. Good thing that fire was put out quickly. Everything being so dry this year
(well, for some areas anyway). I hope you get a nice rain to wash away the smoke and settle the dust.

  19. Spring fires are a rarity here, but we did have one yesterday that was quickly extinguished. After record rainfall in January through April, it is now uncharacteristically dry. Weird weather now seems to be the norm. Sure hope you get rain soon.

  20. Fire is one thing that scares me for sure. My daughter in Iowa said they had smoke from the Canada fire which was so terrible. It was the news that stated it but now I wonder if it wasn't from Minnesota? I hope you get rain soon!
    Stay safe!
