The wind is raw, it looks like it could be warm outside but it is not. Chance hates the wind and thinks right under my feet is a safe spot…not so much.
I still have my long parka out and it comes in real handy to walk Chance in the hour before daylight when he thinks he needs to check out every tree in the entire yard.
The farmers are out working in the fields, dust hangs in the air.
The brush cutters came along and took down more trees under the power line. I hope they are done now. They took down some trees that would have taken 30 plus years to even get close to the power line….some were hazard trees and had to go like the Popple (Aspen). They also took out a fair number of Chokecherry and Pin Cherry Bushes, which were never going to be a problem…and some birds will miss those bushes.
One of the roads we travel had a small shrub/tree where a Meadolark has hung out singing for years… and now it’s singing perch is gone.
The rebuilding of the grocery store in Osage seems to be at a stand still. I thought he hoped to open May 1st, but I don’t think that will be happening.
The snow early yesterday morning brought the Juncos back to our yard.
I am looking forward to the day when we can sit out on the patio and watch the birds and not freeze to death.
Yard art in Jen’s yard last summer when it was warm.
wish I could send you some of my warm weather. I already have tiny tomatoes and peppers growing in my vegetable garden. Even on my property I am mindful of clearing spots of growth. The cardinals that visit me in the Spring do love to nest in the dense shrubbery.
ReplyDeleteIt's cold here in the morning and it's been rainy and damp so the heat is still on. Is it those orange Asplund? trucks that cut down the brush? They were in Iowa and now here too and they are contracted from out East. I got into more than one argument with them when I had my little farm. They cut down an old majestic Walnut tree on my property that wasn't ever going to bother the power lines and they offered a young sapling to replace it. I said no thanks as I wouldn't live long enough to ever see it like it was. They take hundreds of years to get that big. I was at work and don't you know they took the wood and probably sold it for a good price! I am totally against contract work of any kind. There's no sense of connection and community and it takes jobs away from people in the community. It's kickback too...that's how they get these contracts. Oh, don't get me started! LOL!
ReplyDeleteWeather here has been crazy. Spring is knocking on the door but winter weather has come back and run it off a couple of times. And the wind!! Oh my. I really don't like when utility companies cut like that!!

Crazy weather here also. Last week it was cold, rain/snow and windy. Yesterday was sunny, cold and very windy. Today is sunny and cold. My arthritis is really complaining. Sure wish there was a reason why the "Brush" cutters took the trees they do and yet leave some very dangerous one behind.
ReplyDeleteI always hate to see trees cut down. And you just have to wonder about who makes the decisions to cut the ones they do. :-(
ReplyDeleteThe tornado here last month damaged a car wash and a Pizza Hut. They sit side-by-side. The car wash is almost completely repaired. Pizza Hut has done nothing. I feel for the people who have no work right now.
ReplyDeleteEl Nino is a weird one this year.
It is too bad the people who do the clearing, have no sense of what they are doing. Of course as I say that, hubby has had to clear so much here to make the farm livable, and to make him happy. So much habitat lost. Hopefully all the trees we have planted will replace some of it.
We have a tree in the front yard that needs to be trimmed. There is no doubt that if/when any of it falls, it WILL take out the power line under it; but the power company and people who clear stuff for them won't touch it. We can't afford to do it.
We have a cat that doesn't like wind. She would agree with Chance.
Hope you all have a blessed week, Connie.
Tree trimmers...
ReplyDeleteI've been dodging tree trimmers for the past two weeks. Never seen such a flurry of cherry pickers and cops before.
ReplyDeleteWarm weather's gotta get here SOMEtime, right??
It's too bad that the engineers have to go overboard when they clear things for powerline maintenance. They do the same thing here.
ReplyDeleteI always hate to see the bushes and trees whacked just because!

Judging from the above comments, I think that it's unanimous that we don't like to see trees being cut down. It takes so long for them to get to any size, it's just disheartening! You mentioned chokecherry bushes. I grew up in Northern Alberta, Canada, where we had a berry by that name. Talk about puckering your lips! Sour, but makes very wonderful jelly and jam. I've never heard of them since I moved to the Pacific Northwest.
ReplyDeleteYour tree trimmers sound brutal. Here if they are taking out a whole tree, they often come beforehand and mark it with blue paint. They can't cut a tree totally down that is on your property without your permission, although they can trim them back up top around the lines. Years ago we had a discussion with them about the Maple tree at the bottom of our driveway. A hazard to the lines, but such a defining feature of our property that they didn't push for it's removal. And one time I asked how much they would charge me for trimming around the lines that ran to the house. No charge they said, so I gave them some fresh baked muffins:)
ReplyDeleteSure hope you get some Spring coming your way soon.
Too bad about the trees that didn't need to go, especially the meadowlark tree. I can remember when they were common and now for years you hardly ever see or hear them as their habitat has gotten eaten up. I'm sure it's easier to just clear the area rather than trim around the ones that could stay, but I hate how bare everything looks when they are gone.
ReplyDeleteTrees always leave a hole in the sky when they're cut down. It should be a requirement that when a tree is cut down another is planted somewhere nearby. Wildlife depend on the trees for cover, the soil depends on the trees to block the wind, and people depend on trees to provide shade, visual appeal and a wind break.
ReplyDeleteYes, to be able to sit out on the patio and not freeze to death. :)
ReplyDeleteIt does seem like it should be warmer, but it's not. Today the sun isn't even shining in the windows to help warm up the house. Brr! Sorry about the Meadowlark. That's sad. Hope all is well up north!
ReplyDeleteMornings and over nights still chilly here day time warm they say by the weekend our temps will be what they should be from now on with lots of sunshine 18C eh? or 65 maybe even warmer . Love Meadowlarks I think it is a shame the trees are taken down we need trees as do the birdies . I think for every tree that's taken down one should be planted . Thanks for sharing , have a good day !
ReplyDeleteI guess we are going to keep some of the juncos down here. I have a large flock of black birds that seem like they are never going to finish their migration. The are noisy and bullies to the song birds.
ReplyDeleteI hate when they cut down trees/plants with no rhyme/reason. Kinda makes you sick. We were very warm today after several days of rain and wind. I sure love the yard art. Very bright and fun. Hi to Chance!
ReplyDeleteHi FSOF, I have wanted to ask a bunch of questions for a long time and haven't but today I really need to ask why do you and Chance go walkies an hour before daylight. Is that all year round? BRRRR
ReplyDeleteChance needs to go potty early in the morning:)
DeleteMakes me sad when trees and shrubs are cut down if it's not absolutely necessary. Around here there's a push on to plant more trees so hopefully....
ReplyDeleteSpring is late this year! Hope it warms up soon.
ReplyDeleteI don't like to see indiscriminate tree and brush cutting either. Thinking about that meadow lark makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteSpring was way to early here, but right now we are back to cld rain for a few days. That should slow the flower fading down a bit.
