Juncos

The Juncos are here.  They fill the trees and the ground.

The Juncos that frequent our yard are ground feeders, I have never seen them in the feeders.  I have heard that they will visit feeders…perhaps they don’t like ours.

Chance and I were out after supper playing ball.  When Chance got tired we settled down quiety to watch the birds.

One by one the Juncos came back.

Lots of Juncos

They were pecking at something in between the garages.

Juncos and a puddle

They were visiting the mud puddle in the drive way, just for drinking…I didn’t see them bathing.

Junco

This one came close enogh for a close up.  Some are a darker grey than others. I think that the darker ones are the males.  They will stick around for awhile and then head north for their breeding grounds in Canada and Alaska.

Chance and I sat so long that a really dumb squirrel tried to sneak up on us.Squirrel

One click of the camera and this fellow was gone.

It is that time of year where everything is brown or grey…with some occassional white stuff overnight that melts during the day.  I am ready for March to be over…I think it will go out like a lamb.

  1. Breezy with rain expected today here in GA, but a high of 75. I hope you, FG and Chance will have a good day. Theo is like Chance, he loves for us to throw the ball....he has a problem letting the ball go, though!

  2. I have sen the Juncos here for about a week and a half now. Once in a great while they will eat at the feeder, but mostly they eat the seed that falls on the ground. March in S.E. WI will be going out like a lamb as it is in the 50's today with rain all day.

  3. Aren't squirrels just the silliest creatures. I love how they freeze when they see me...just waiting for one of us to move...usually me..I don't have the patience to out wait them. March went out like a big old bear here. Rain, storms, more rain, more storms, flooding, lightening. I can say I am not sad to see it go, except that it is time moving on.

  4. When I fed the birds, the juncos only ate the feed from underneath, never at the feeder itself. Must be a junco trait. :-)

  5. So glad spring is arriving in your part of the country! Birds seem to be so active and excited this time of the year. They seem to really be in sync with nature's energy!

  6. I'm getting weary of nature's monochrome color scheme, too. From Mon - Wed a storm dropped about 10 or 12" of snow. It's FULL of moisture and will melt quickly.

  9. We have juncos all winter, and I'm pretty sure I've seen them on the feeder. That would have been before the red wing blackbirds found us. Now they hog the feeder, and heave everything over the side that they don't like, so the juncos are quite happy down below. March definitely going out like a lamb here, sunny and warm!

  10. The Juncos winter here but I have never seen a flock like the one you photographed. They are a classy looking bird. Look like they are dressed up in tuxedos. They even have tails! :)

  13. I still have a few juncos to send your way. I will have to watch and see if they stay for the summer. The one I saw today was trying to figure out how to get seed from the sock feeder, but they just can't do it. The juncos search for fallen seed under the sock. It is very cold here and I see you are all a whole lot colder.

  15. I've also noticed that Juncos are starting to come to our feeder whereas they used to ground feed only. Our tray feeder is "fenced in" with wire that has openings just large enough for smaller birds to get through. Any "new" Juncos are a little bewildered at first but catch on fast so they also climb through. This wire keeps the greedy Starlings and Blackbirds out.

  17. Great photos! When I see your bird pix, They remind me of how much Officer Friendly loved to watch the birds. It's actually what he was doing when we met. He was looking at peregrine falcons through binoculars when I met him. We are supposed to get snow overnight in 'the cities."

  20. I find juncoes come in just before dirty weather and clean up under the feeders. I've never had them in the feeders. they are very welcome little birds.

  21. I'm not sure if the juncos passed through here or not. It doesn't look familiar. Yes, squirrels....Nitty and Annie are out almost all day trying to keep the squirrel(s) out of the yard and the bird feeder. It is their daily goal. They come in for a nap in the afternoon and then right back out to stand guard. We all need a purpose!

  22. We have Junco's too but they continue northward and don't stay.
