Chance: A Harness?

My turn!  My turn!  I think I should have turns more often.

Far Side ordered me a harness.  She said “That boy needs some help sometimes getting up the steps and into the car.  His arthur-itis is getting worse.”

The harness came in the mail and she unwrapped it joyfully and set about making it the right size for me.  She is so easy to entertain.

I am a little “fluffy.”  They are working on exercising me more so I feel better but sometimes I talk Far Guy into a few extra treats….he is a push over.

Far Guy tried to get me to use a step stool to get into the vehicle…I didn’t like that at all.  I was ready to stay home all by myself if I had to use that thing to go for a ride…and you know how much I like my rides in the car. I can only get in on the passenger side and only if the seat is way back so I can jump to the floor then to the seat and then into my very own hairy back seat.

I was having a hard time jumping up on the bed too…Far Guy had to help. Pushing off on my back legs is problematic sometimes.

Far Side likes red so my new harness is red and black.

She says I look snazzy and the harness is perfect, it even has a handle for a quick assist if I should need one….whatever.

I don’t have to wear it all the time, just on days when I am having troubles.

Far Side says that these kinds of troubles happen to the ageing…and I guess I am 11 years and 4 months old now.  Nearing that average age for a Border Collie, their life span is from 9 to 17 years with the average being 12.  Of course I think I am way above average for a Border Collie!

  2. Chance, I like your new red harness and I hope it helps you on the days you need a little assistance. My niece Brooke will pick up her 2 border collie mix puppies today. They have been living in north GA until they were old enough to have all their shots etc.

  3. Chance, I love your new harness. The red color looks so handsome on you. There is no shame in needing a little help when one gets older. In fact feel proud of yourself for getting old and enjoy it. Hey, man whatever gets you more attention I say!!!!

  6. Our Kits was a little BC and she'd just go to the door and look expectantly up to give her a boost....Notshy was bigger than you and I wish I'd a thought about a harness...hers would have had to be blue.

  7. Chance, you are definitely WAY above average, and very charming. Handsome, too! I have arthuritis too. It's not too much fun.

  8. Sorry Chance about your arthritis. Our 14 year old border collie, Bear has to be lifted in and out of the car now.

  9. You look great in red. Reba is 14 and 5 months, and she has trouble with her back legs too. I have to boost her up the stairs to the deck, but her front legs work fine. Tell them to look into Golden Paste (tumeric) for you.

  10. You are far above average, Chance.
You look great in red. Our little black dog usually wore a red collar and a red harness.
Hope your new harness helps you. Take care.

  12. Hi Chance!
Always so happy to hear from you. I love your new harness and the color is perfect for you. We have 3 dogs much smaller than you are and they all have snazzy harnesses. I think harnesses are so much easier on a dog not being a big pull on the neck. Our harnesses even have strips of cloth on them that glow in the dark for safety. Our harnesses don't have handles on top but that sure is a good idea. I wish I had a handle on me to help with my arthuritis! "Whatever works" I always say. I am so glad you can be assisted this way.Such a good idea.

  13. Our cat has a harness that she hates to wear, but she realizes that's the only way she gets to go outside.

  15. Love the red harness! You will appreciate it, I'm sure. LOoks pretty snazzy!

[Now you made me google average lifespan of domestic cat--lots say around 15--in a listing by breed--12-14 yrs. Karma just turned 11 and is very stiff legged, but luckily she not as big and heavy as Chance is.]

  19. Don't feel bad Cahnce. I feel the last time I tried to jump in the car and Mom got out a ramp she bought for our dog Abby when she got older. Abby has since passed on but she kept it for me and now I have to use it. Secretly though, I am grateful. Last time when I fell I pulled a tendon in my back leg and oh boy, that hurt and I limped for days so now I don't have to worry. The only problem is, Mom's not taking me with her as much as it is a job for her to unfold the ramp and put it away and then do it again when we get home. It's heavy too and once she pinched her finger in it badly. So, not so much riding in the car anymore unless it's to the vet but hey....it's alright...she's almost always here with us and we can go outside and stay out as long as we want with no leash as long as we stay in our yard and we always do. You're not alone good buddy....it happens to all of us. I must say you do look good in red! TTYL! ~ Nitty and Annie, Grace and Miss Peeps send their regards.

  21. Dear Chance: I totally understand how problematic it can be to have trouble pushing off from back legs. Love the harness, though! We all need a quick assist sometimes.

  24. Sorry to hear about your arthritis... Hope Far Side is giving you pills to make it better. Love your new harness!

  25. Well, Chance, it's hard to imagine you being anything but way above normal. Looking very snazzy in that great harness, just right for you. :-)

  26. Barney is the same boat as you Chance. I think Barney is a year older than you and he gets as much exercise as I do. I guess maybe I get more exercise. I quit walking him because of the cold. Barney's new platform at the back step makes it easier to get on the platform, one step, and the walk over to do the two last steps. Three in a row doesn't work for him. We are having a rough winter with Button who is 18 years old now. His eyesight is almost gone now but he still gets around. Heart pills help a little. He is so small that he gets carried a lot and won't take a single step when his dog servants taking care of him can get him up and down. That said he can still jump up on the couch and off again with a blind leap. He follows us around a lot by sound and probably a little shadow vision. I like your collar harness Chance. It is a great color of red. You look really good in it
