Winter Sunset

The sun is on it’s southern most track.  For us that means we can catch a sunset over Guyles Lake.
But you have to hurry because this time of year the sun set comes on really fast.
Sunsetting near Guyles lake
Chance and I were hurrying along, trying not to miss the sunset.   He knows the roads and keeps a look out for deer or turkeys…we saw neither.

Sometimes it is all about the chance for Chance.  The chance to go for a ride, when some days he has to be content with staying at home in the yard…so anything beyond that is exciting.
Sunset over Guyles lake
We just barely caught the sunset.   Those trees that circle the front of Guyles Lake are Tamaracks and even if they look like dead sticks all winter in the spring they will turn all lush and green.

Once again we are thrust into the darkest part of the year.  Today our sunrise is a 8:05 AM and sets at 4:36 PM for 8 hours and 31 minutes of sunlight or 15 hours and 29 minutes of darkness.  The Winter Solstice officially happens for us at 10:49 PM. I always look forward to the return of the light little by little minute by minute.

It is good to finally be officially in winter.  It is probably my least favorite time of year, I am ready to get it over with already.

  1. Yup, now begins the return of the light and longer days and we count the extra minutes each day until finally it's apparent that the days are longer. It's no wonder all civilizations have seen it as time in need of a celebration. The sunset on Guyles Lake is beautiful.

  2. What a pretty sunset shot! Been so cold I would think Chance wouldn't miss his rides as much, but I guess not. Sounds like he was still eager to jump in the car. :)
When it is deeply cloudy all day it is like we never have daylight because I need lights on inside all day long. To me the holiday season makes up for the dark days...until January--LOL! ;) But by then it is getting lighter for longer.
Hope you guys are feeling better.

  3. I too always like to remember that after today the light begins its return. It's a beautiful sunset, Connie. And even though it's not your favorite season, winter is when the world sleeps. Me, too. :-)

  6. Lovely sunset and oh for us to be more like Chance - just enjoying the chance to go! One thing about it, we don't have to stay up late to get sunset photos right now!

  7. Nice for us that you are such a good photographer. Not all of us have the opportunity to walk on such beautiful country roads! I envy you your snow, although must admit it's nice not to have to experience the cold!

  8. Both of your photos of the sunset are very beautiful. Winter is not my favorite time of year as I need daylight and sunshine to make me happy. It is raining here today - very glad it is not snow s my back is hurting today and I wouldn't be able to shovel the stuff. Tell ChanceI am glad he goes along with you on your walks to protect you from wild animals.

  16. Very nice photos! I'm interested to see that although our local sunrise is almost the same as yours ( ours is 8:03), our sunset is at 4:14. Guess that's because we're so much farther North.

  21. Our times are a little different, but our daylight hours are close to the same. Here in Seattle we had 8 hr, 25 min of daylight. No pretty sunsets here, just dark skies and heavy rain. We look forward to any days with actual sunlight. Happy Solstice!

  22. I'm celebrating that incremental increase of daylight time--I don't care if it's seconds longer. I need that sunlight!

Today seemed doubly gloomy around here, since we finally have some serious rain. Hard to complain about the darkness, though, since we really need the rain.

  23. I too am thrilled that the days are now getting longer. So many grey, wet, dreary days this time of the year.

  24. Ha! Ha! You always make me laugh even when I know you're serious. The pictures are beautiful.
