Wonky Trees and Soup

I finished painting the wonky trees.  I liked this color…a little Blue Spruce looking color.

Wonky Trees

I also finished the Santa woodcarvings.

Wednesday was soup day…five hours later there was soup for many days cooling to go into the freezer. I didn’t get much else done.  I made my usual old standby soup;  beef with carrots, cabbage, rutabaga and potatoes.  I do run some tomatoes through a strainer…I DO NOT like chunks of tomatoes or seeds in my soup.  I made two huge Dutch ovens full.  I love making soup in my Cast Iron Dutch Oven.

Far Guy cooked up his own soup…he makes a Chicken Tortilla Soup that he likes.  I don’t much care for it.  Chicken, chicken broth, cream of chicken soup, black beans, corn, green chilies, diced tomatoes and some taco seasoning.

Supper was easy and just needed some warming up.  The day was dark and dreary but the house was cozy warm and smelled awesome…I had a wonderful nap until suppertime.

Perfect dreary day activities.

  1. Both of the soups sound good to me. I love a small amount of cabbage added to soup. It gives it so much flavor. I do much the same thing, since I am a "Soup Lover". I cook a big pot, then, fill individual serving containers. It's so nice to have them in the freezer, ready for an easy meal.

  2. Now I am hungry for soup. Now that I'm back home, I'll be hiking today and maybe I'll make some soup for the weekend. Yours sounds delicious! :-)

  3. I am a huge soup lover (hubby not so much). Can't think of anything better to do on a dreary day than make a big pot of soup. When I make soup there is always plenty to go in the freezer. Yummmmm

  5. Cool carved trees!! They have a certain look to them - like the santas. How knows? some day there will be a artistic period like "art deco" called "far sideo"

  6. Soup days have definitely returned. Nothing better than a steaming bowl on a cold day.

  7. I like soup, Terry not so much. I also like to feed company soup...I don't care if they are soup fans or not...soup feeds lots of people cheaply!

  8. I love the little trees. And soup is my favourite food -- especially in the winter.

  9. Three cheers for cast iron! I don't have a cast iron Dutch oven, but the last cast iron piece I bought was a Wagner Bacon and Egg Breakfast Skillet. (square skillet with two squares on one half for individual eggs and a rectangle on the other half for the bacon. You can google the name to see an image. I bought it in Nevis. :-) Love the wonky trees!

  12. Hold the pepper and I would like them both. We were out of store bought soup for lunch so we had grilled sandwiches filled with ham and cheese.

Don't tell Hubby but your soup sounds better.

  14. I love getting back to soup making in the fall. It's a favorite meal for us and yours sound delicious. Nice to have some in the freezer for those days when you don't want to cook.

  15. I need to make soup! Your beef soup sounds good, like my mother used to make, with the addition of pearl barley. I used to make it too, when I had soup bones from family produced beef. I usually make beef stew in my cast iron dutch oven.

  17. Nothing better than home made soup. It takes a lot of work but it's the best. I make two kinds of carrot soup as I usually end up with lots of carrots from the garden.

  18. Your soup sounds so yummy, I might have to dig out my mom's old recipe and make some. It sounds like yours except for the rutabaga! :o) I do hope the sun comes out again....my husband must suffer from S.A.D. because when we get a dreary day he complains and complains. Its really windy today too. Maybe tomorrow will be nicer! Thanks for your great blog!

  19. Those little trees are cute as can be. Looks like winter and a cold wind blowing them. I haven't made soup in a while. Yours sounds really good.

  20. It's dark and dreary and very stormy here. I didn't make soup for supper but that would have been a good idea. I wonder, do you use a recipe? Or just wing it? My soups are never the same twice.

  21. Those two soups sound delicious.

  22. That's the one plus to cold weather: homemade soup! I just finished my second set: an herbed split pea soup with cabbage. I know it doesn't sound appetizing, but we just loved that recipe the first time we tried it. We make up turkey stock by the gallons and freeze it after the holidays, then add it to soups all year long, so just finished my last of the turkey stock in the split pea soup. Before that, it was lentils and sausage. Nice to have some in the freezer, but even nicer to have it simmering, warming up the house and making everything smell so wonderful. It won't be long, and we'll be doing the whole turkey stock routine all over again...

  23. I love the Wonky trees :) are you doing any craft shows this fall? We had soup weekend for deer hunting opener (Bean Soup and White Chicken Chili - which sounds alot like Far Guy's tortilla soup). Happy Fall!

  25. I love your trees! They look like Charlie Brown Christmas trees without the ornaments. I saw my CB tree for this year in the woods. I just don't want to bring ticks in the house. I love soup and I too love my cast iron dutch oven to cook it in. The tortilla soup sounds good and there's a white chili I'd like to make this fall/winter too. We're supposed to get heavy rain and wind Monday and Tuesday so I think I'll pick up a few things at the local grocery store and go to the library too and then stay home and make soup! LOL! Stay cozy!

  26. Your trees are great. It's time for us to make some soup, too. But first we need to eat some of whatever is filling up the freezer!
