Fall color in the yard

The Euonymus alatus ‘Chicago Fire’ (Burning Bush) has beautiful color this fall.

Euonymus

Euonymous

As you can see it lives along the edge of the woods and has no competition for color.  It needs a good trim….maybe next spring.

Viburnum or Snowball Bush

This is my Viburnum opulus ‘Roseum’  or Minnesota Snowball Bush.  It has marvelous fall color.

Yard work is slowly coming to an end.  The sixth go round with leaves was accomplished last week.  One more go round and I should be done…I am ready to be done but not quite ready for the s word yet.

Wagon wheel and Viburnum

My wagon wheel with the Snowball Bush way in the background.  I hope the old fishing net lasts another year…it has been up there since 1999…so it is 16 years old and getting rotten in spots.  Not sure where I would ever find a fishing net like that one again…we found it on an Air Force Base Beach on the Gulf of Mexico, it took us two days to dig it out of the sand and drag it several miles to the parking lot.  The beach there is twelve miles long we used to love walking there nearly everyday the winter we spent in Florida. The fishing net works great for Morning Glories or my other vines to crawl up.

  1. I love burning bushes..I had one on the farm on one side of my screened-in porch and it covered the whole side of the porch. Your snowball bush is pretty too. Great idea about the fishing net and glad it has given you so many years of service after all that work. Good memories too, I bet. We're behind you in Fall, of course. But it is here now with cooler temps and falling leaves. The hummers left on the 10th. I should probably mow one more time if the weather cooperates and I'm still doing some painting outside. Looking good up there! The "s" word is coming....maybe this weekend...I watch you guys on the weather channel although I think they tend to exaggerate things. We're just getting rain for now...remnants of Patrica.

  3. The burning bush (or flame bush as we call them around here) is so very pretty. The ones in my neighborhood are all so vibrant this year. Love the fish net idea for climbing flowers; hope yours lasts a while longer. Most of the leaves are gone here except for the red maple in my yard , which is always the last "hanger on". Can't wait to put the lawn mower away and have at least two weeks before I have to activate the snow shovel.

  4. We've got nothing but rain for the next week, so I'll be taking very few pictures, I'm afraid. It rained last night and I just looked out at the big full moon through the fog. Pretty but not easy to take pictures today, or I'd get a couple of the red flame bushes around here. Yours are great! :-)

  5. Oh I missed saying happy birthday to Chance! He is so pretty and does not look eleven years old. Would have to be all that love and good care he gets. I like the old wagon wheel picture!

  7. Yikes! They said the s-eord for us here tomorrow night. I hope they are wrong. I have a wagon wheel in my garden too. That fishnet is awesome! Bet it looks great with morning glories.

  8. Great story about the fishnet.
October is fleeing too quickly. We're entering the rainy season, but with lots more leaves to be blown off the trees. Those leaves will form a soggy mat not so easily dealt with.

  12. Very clever use of fishing net! I love the color of your euonymous and viburnum...was noticing yesterday that euonymous bushes all over town are turning red while ours is still green. Or greenish. It's outside the dining room window and in the old days when the sun shone on it in the afternoon the whole room turned pink. Hope you continue to have mild weather for a while!

  13. Ocean beaches always leave us with wonderful memories. To have the net from there is really great. We are now wet from continue rain. We need it but the cold that we have with it is very uncomfortable. My glories are still plugging away in spite of how cold and wet that it is.

  15. The picture of the wagon wheel and fishing net is worthy of being on a calendar. I hope that net has a few more years before it disintegrates.

  17. nice to still have some color in the yard. We have plenty of green yet with the pine trees although you would be surprised how many needles blanket the ground. Like the story about the fish net :)

  19. You worked hard for that fishing net, hope it lasts a while yet! We bought a piece of fishing net at a garage sale many years ago and used it to make a hockey goal for our son. We were up late Christmas Eve trying to fasten it around the frame we had made.

  22. I've missed a few posts again, I see! Happy belated birthday to Chance. My burning bush is a pitiful sight this year...I didn't have time to water this summer while taking care of Mark, and now it looks like it might be half-dead! It was so pretty last year, too. Grrr...
Love, love, LOVE your old wagon wheel..those are really hard to find. I have a couple of the old metal ones, but would love to find a wooden one. Have a super day!
