Remember those spelling tests in school. I pretty much memorized the words.
I have the most problems with definately/definitely, diahreah/diarrhea, glamerous/glamorous…sometimes I think I should write them 100 times on a sheet of paper just like in the old days…thank goodness for spell check.
This sign has bugged me for years. This is on Hwy 44 heading west.
This is near Hwy 44 headed east.
Of course we all know they are the same town. But someone besides me should know about this spelling error…so now you all know. The 20 people or so who live in Ponsford probably don’t care.
With that population, they probably aren't bothered with the mistake. Greetings!

ReplyDeleteI just used my dictionary to look up the spelling of "minuscule" since it said my way was wrong (with an i instead of a u). Helpful little things, aren't they. That sign would drive me crazy. :-)

ReplyDeleteI wonder if fiord was intended to be the last half of the name. I would think somebody would get some duct tape and cover up the extra letter. I see in one of our ramps going onto I 35-80 we have a sign that says take turns. They don't want to tell which lane to yield they just want somebody to yield to the other. They could even say the more aggressive guy gets on first.

ReplyDeleteSome very good spelling rules have been discovered since we took spelling. It's sad that today very little spelling is taught.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the residents of the town aren't sure either! I've always been the go-to person for family and friends where spelling is concerned. Guess it comes from a lifetime of editing and being an English teacher! That's okay though because I always need help with math and directions.
ReplyDeleteDid you have phonetics in school? Most people that have trouble spelling did not have phonetics as they stopped teaching it for awhile. They have since realized the error of their ways and now have brought it back as there was a whole bunch of people that couldn't spell. Although, I must admit taking Spanish ruined my good spelling! LOL! And I can't speak Spanish either!
ReplyDeleteGoing to visit our son and his family for the first time, we saw a sign... Shelby 15 miles. A few miles further on, (as we headed directly toward Shelby), we saw another sign...Shelby 20 miles.

ReplyDeleteSpelling mistakes irritate me, and especially when I make them! The most common one I see is the misuse of 'your', instead of using 'you're'. And if I see that on a website for a business, I'll probably look for different company.

LOL! Our street name and subdivision name both have the word Latham, and on one it is spelled Lathem!!! It gives us fits when we are giving directions!

ReplyDeleteI used to be a pretty fair speller. Was never really excellent or anything, but spell check has degraded the spelling part of my brain something awful. I am so used to not having to worry about it anymore. Then I go to hand write a letter and am misspelling words right and left these days. How do kids these days learn how to spell at all?!
