Had company ( Sue and Charlie) from Indiana and low and behold they brought Far Guy another Carnival Ride for his train set!
I am not sure where it will end up on the train layout…but finding a place and rearranging will take a few afternoons keep someone busy.
I fixed a Minnesota Hotdish for supper with crusty bread, peaches and a slice of almond bread for dessert. I used the good plates…again. The Hotdish is layered in a 9 x 13 pan, tator tots, hamburger, mixed vegetables (frozen), one can of cream of something soup diluted with about a can of water (I like Cream of Chicken the best)…then top it with a cheese (cojack) of your choice and bake it at 350 for about an hour. Other parts of the country may call this a Casserole…but it is really a Hotdish!
Good to see old friends that you haven’t seen in two years!
I noticed the Midwest Living magazine also refers to "Hot Dish Recipes". Somehow that appeals to me more than the word "casserole".
ReplyDeleteAnd I am originally from the Midwest - an Ohio girl born & raised and left as adult. [having also lived in New England (where my Mom's family from), Hawaii, Florida and now SW GA.
DeleteMy family called it Hot Dish too, but my 1st hubs family from eastside of Cleveland and they always said casserole.
So go figure...

I love the new carnival ride. Far Guy should be kept busy for a while. Around here the dish is referred to as a casserole. Having lived around the U.S. I am used to the term Hot Dish. Since I am of German descent maybe casserole is a German thing. I have made that dish before and everyone loves it. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI just love that pretty new ride! The dish would have been called a casserole in my mom's house, and I think she made something similar. I think I like the idea of calling it a hot dish, but my memories don't allow me to rearrange them on purpose. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'll have to think if there is a different name for that around here. I've never heard anything but casserole, but now that I've heard hot dish from up there, I'm wondering...
ReplyDeleteSuch fun to reconnect with old friends.
ReplyDeleteThe hotdish/casserole sounds tasty. Good to visit with old friends, and that in one cool addition to the train set!
ReplyDeleteMixed veggies sounds better than just icky old frozen peas to me for the hot dish.
ReplyDeleteIt's the kind of thing people would have brought to a church supper in the 60's. But my mother did not do tater tots or frozen mixed vegies. The ingredients would have had to come out of our well house (potatoes) or from the freezer full of home grown produce. We did call them hot dishes - a farm thing- or casseroles.
ReplyDeleteI've never made a dish like this - mac and cheese is about my limit when it comes to casseroles. I guess that's why I take desserts to potlucks and picnics.
That miniature carnival ride is too cute! Good to have friends visit for supper isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI was pretty sure that "casserole" is a French word but looked it up in Wikipedia, and yes it is! Too fancy for MInnesotans so we call them hot dishes.

Poppy claims he hates casseroles. Maybe if I start calling it a "hotdish" he will think it is something different. Making a casserole is a good change from always having to cook a meat and two or three vegetables. I like the new carnival ride. That collection is amazing!
ReplyDeleteWow! That's a beauty of a carnival ride! I'm going to have to try your "hotdish" or casserole as we always called them. I love them because you while it's baking you can clean up the kitchen and you're pretty much done. I looked for my invite but I must have misplaced it....LOL!
ReplyDeleteI love the picture of Chance half hidden by the tree. It reminds me of the wolf picture they had awhile back. Did you ever see that? Was that what you were going for? I'm off to work outside....it's cooler here and I must take advantage as next week it will be hot again. Mark my words...summer isn't done with us down here yet.
Hotdish! Yes casseroles hit the spot.
ReplyDeleteTater tot hot dish ... Now I'm getting homesick! My daughter makes it best.
ReplyDeleteLove hotdishes! Always!

Wow, you may have to build a bump out on the room to get fore space for more tables. It is a great looking toy. My mom made hers with tuna so many years that I don't like that anymore. Hamburger in it would be good.
ReplyDeleteThat "ride" looks like just the thing! It's always nice to have good friends stop by for a visit and dinner. These sound like special friends. Glad you had an enjoyable time!
ReplyDeleteYup hotdish it is!!! It is a midwest thing I think. Sounds yummy and I like the new train piece!
