We headed up north.
We passed a beautiful sunflower field on the way.
Crop report; the fields all look pretty good, the grain is almost ready to harvest. The beans and sugar beets all look great and the corn is making cobs and kernels.
I gave all of Jen’s new plantings the once over…they look pretty good. She is not pleased with one of her gardens…the one I suggested that she plant Coleus in. She is right…they are not doing well. Coleus do not like that spot it must be too warm in the late afternoon.
Only a couple of the plants are doing reasonably well. She likes her gardens full and lush and the Coleus garden is not meeting her expectations. She says she is just going to plant Hydrangeas there next year. They are replacing all the windows and getting new siding..so I imagine all her flowers near the house will suffer a bit.
Jen hosted a birthday party for her husband Andy, he turns 40 this week. Supper was a BBQ beef brisket, some of the best potato salad this side of the Rockies, Texas caviar, vegetables, dips, chips and birthday cupcakes. We left before the singin’ and dancin’ part of the party started and we were back home before dark…yes, we are getting old. I remember when my Grandparents said “We like to be home before dark” I wondered did they think they would turn into pumpkins at dark or what?? …now I understand.
When I think of my fortieth birthday, it seems like it was yesterday. But it wasn't. Imagine, I thought I was old! :-)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds perfectly lovely. And that turning into a pumpkin thing, well I hope to never find out:) Hug B
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful celebration.
ReplyDeleteWe like to be home before dark also.

I love coleus -- my mother had beautiful coleus plants in her garden. Turn into a pumpkin -- LOL!
ReplyDeleteI like to get on home early myself. I've always been that way though- in my jams by 8:30...everyone laughs, but I'm all about quiet evenings and early to bed. Then I am up with the chickens and ready to go!
ReplyDeleteMore plants than coleus are fussy about where they have their feet. some plants are more tolerant than others. Not only do we come home early but we go fewer places.
ReplyDeleteIt is really funny how our perspective changes as we get a bit older. I catch myself sometimes sounding just like my mother.
ReplyDeleteLove that sunflower field. Oh, to be only 40! Sounds like a delicious birthday meal. We, like so many of you, are home before dark, just as if the car would turn into a pumpkin. Rarely, when we drive to Atlanta during winter, it is dark when we arrive back home. We laugh that the cats will send out a missing persons alert!
ReplyDeleteWell happy birthday Andy. My oldest son Andy turns 40 in December. I have trouble trying to have similar things in my garden as my mom did in southern Iowa and that is a whole different zone. She always had coleus but I can't seem to make it work here either. It is fun to see daughter having the same green thumb as others in her family. My youngest boy in Maine follows we in growing things and I would never had thought he would. I guess I have seen coleus grow in pots under the shade of an eave where they got a lot of moisture through the garden hose.
ReplyDeleteYup at night in Rochester I can't tell the car taillights from the stop & go lights &the blinking tavern signs... Not good :)
ReplyDeleteJust got home from Nebraska, and the "Wheat Whackers" were busy in the fields and moving down the road. I bet they will be in your area soon.
ReplyDeleteI don't like to drive at night if it's on the interstate or freeway. A quiet 2 lane road is usually okay for me, but all those headlights bother me now that I'm, ahem, older.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a super birthday party was enjoyed! And I'd love to see a field of sunflowers.
Sounds like a great party! And I like the scenery in your shots.
ReplyDeleteMy Coleus aren't doing very well either. Maybe the weather in general just isn't quite right. I have things that went nuts this year that haven't for many years and other things (like one daylily) that aren't doing well. Go figure! I'm with you - want to be home or nearly home by dark as I hate driving in the dark.
ReplyDeleteI totally get the notion of being home before dark! The Coleus in the photo is beautiful even though others may not be doing as well. The party menu sounds delicious!
