When we go off on an adventure….think out for a drive…often times we will say “Maybe we will see ( pick one) a bear or a moose or a wolf.” It is just something we say, it gives purpose to our gallivanting.
We took off yesterday to hit a few garage sales and an estate sale…got more glass dishes since I am a hoarder. Then we headed up north because we heard that a Lady Slipper that we have never seen before might be blooming. We stopped at an antique shop just because we had not been there for awhile…Far Guy got a train car and I bought some old postcards cause I hoard those things too. The lady in the antique shop said she never talks to the locals only tourists so she had no idea about any flowers…(She must live under a rock too.) No new to us Lady Slippers were found in the old pine forests.
Then we headed home. One of the back roads was blissfully empty of tourist traffic…Far Guy said “Maybe we will see a bear.” I replied “Maybe we will.”
Far Guy said “Is it coming toward us?” “NO” I said “OH BAD WORD it is a BEAR!”
As we got closer he got larger! Good thing my camera bag was on my lap… in about two seconds I was ready to take photos through the dirty old windshield.
It was very windy out, the wind was from the south so the bear couldn’t smell us. About that time the loyal dog in the back seat barked at the bear…
He kicked up gravel as he sped off into the woods. Let me tell you they can move really fast when they want to.
This is the fourth bear I have seen in my lifetime…and my second photograph of a bear. Far Guy’s second bear…the last one he saw was about 30 years ago when it ran across our driveway at the resort.
It was a good day…we saw a bear and we weren’t wandering around in the woods.
*** The Bear was seen in the Northern part of Becker County just North of Boot Lake in Savannah Township.

ReplyDeleteI saw a black bear in Florida a couple years ago while walking on a road - the bear saw me and turned and ran away so fast I did have time to even be scared! They sure can move fast!
Too bad about the Lady Slipper. Were you told what kind it was? Just curious. They are fascinating. Amazing to catch a photo of the bear. Big enough, right? For all the traipsing around in the woods I've done in Hubbard County, I'm REALLY glad I have not come across one. Great outing! Good that Far Guy was up for a drive the day after the infusion center.
ReplyDeleteWe were looking for Cypripedium acaule, one we have never seen in the wild. We may have been too early, hopefully in about 2 weeks we can search again.
DeleteWow, how exciting! We saw one in Yellowstone year before last and it was a thrill. Glad we were in a car 'cause as you say, they really can move.

ReplyDeleteYikes! You were close enough to touch it! That reminds of the time at the school where I was principal. It was a totally suburban area, but it was bordered on two sides by woods and farms. A bear was spotted roaming the streets, and we had to go into lockdown until he was redirected back to the woods. Sorry you missed your lovely flowers, though.

You hit the jackpot on this trip. the only thing you missed was the mysterious lady slipper.
DeleteIf I let our Boxer walk down the hill to the mailbox, she thinks she has had an adventure. She really does love to ride in the car but since I am generally by myself, it is inconvenient cuz she can't sit out there alone when it is parked - - - too hot and also I would be afraid someone would steal her. She is so sweet.
ReplyDeleteThe bear is HUGE! It's a shame they are so dangerous because they look like something you would want to hug - - if they weren't dangerous.

ReplyDeleteWhile I don't take black bear real seriously grizzleys in Montana always did. Thou when I explained they could go faster than a horse I always added I wasn't worried cause I could run faster than she could....:)

ReplyDeleteWow! Lucky you! I've been up to Canada and Minnesota and other places where there are bears (here) and I have never seen one! I thought I saw one here once but didn't think there were bears here but then they said yes so I guess that was one but If you don't realize it does it count? I don't think so!

Wow! I'm totally impressed and great job with the camera! I've get to see a bear that close and well that is okay too! We say the same thing when we go driving in the back woods.
