Birds

We have another new bird. A Yellow Bellied Sapsucker.   Not sure why he/she is called that…I tried to get a photo of his/her belly…it is a creamy pale butter color.

Show me your yellow belly

He sounds different than our Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers.  He announces before he comes into the feeders.

Yellow Bellied Sapsucker

He is very handsome.

The Hummingbird is sticking around, I think it likes the private feeder.

So far not too many more bees than normal.  I am allergic…so that was a concern.

Chance and I like sitting outside after supper watching the birds…until the skeeters send us in for the night.

  1. I love your bird pictures. We don't seem to get many out of the ordinary birds around here. Haven't seen many bees around here at all so far. My hubby is allergic to them also.

  2. You are becoming quite an accomplished bird photographer. I love that hummer with its wings just a blur. :-)

  3. I agree with D Jan! You are a birdy picture taking pro!

The yellow on the belly isn't very pronounced is it? Of course we have so-called Purple Finches that are by far more red than purple!

  5. It would be a concern for you, but it would be encouraging to hear that you are noticing more bees than usual. Far too many have been killed/died off over the last few years.

  7. We got "bee guards" for our feeders so the wasps seem to have gotten the message. I love the sapsucker and maybe that was a girl?? Am going to have to go look them up and see if there are differences (or young ones).

  8. Well here you go - apparently they may or may not have yellow - who knew! LOL From allaboutbirds
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are mostly black and white with boldly patterned faces. Both sexes have red foreheads, and males also have red throats. Look for a long white stripe along the folded wing. Bold black-and-white stripes curve from the face toward a black chest shield and white or yellowish underparts.

  10. excellent photos! I'm assuming it's the male that has the more colors? Usually the way in species outside of humans. LOL

  11. Now the sapsucker will drill a nice pattern of holes in a poplar or birch tree. the hummingbird takes advantage of this and gets sap. The hummingbird will even chase the sapsucker away.

  12. That bird is very pretty. A new one to me to see. Mama, John and I enjoyed sitting outside after supper each night watching the hummers, too.

  13. It is a neat woodpecker. I don't think I have ever seen one but that name is one I had not forgotten. I saw a red headed woodpecker while driving the car near a golf course south of us. I never see them but the Out on the Prairie guy is showing them every once in a while. I suppose the yellow bellied is a lot like the red bellied where it really doesn't have much color on its tummy. Good shots and you have a hummer too.

  16. I like woodpeckers. Most of ours are the red headed woodpeckers and the Downy. I can't get a good picture of a hummingbird like you have. We have about four at the feeders so far.

  17. We've been seeing quite a few hummingbirds around here lately. Of course, depends on what flowers are available. Hummingbirds have their favorites, too :)

  18. I love watching the birds! Skeeters, not so much. Although, the skeeters don't really bother me, but the biting flies do. Horrid things.
