Snow Stick, Spines and Seafood

We still have winter here, it has been below zero again. –13 F one morning that is –25 C eh.

Snowstick March 26 about 10 amd ome hal;f inches

Somewhere about 10 1/ 2 to 11 inches of snow remains at the snow stick.

Harriet asked about Bullhead that I mentioned yesterday.  We have a fish here in Minnesota called a Bullhead.  Technically it is a Catfish…but we call them Bullheads.  Here is a link to some photos at the MN DNR site.  Bullheads have spines near their fins.  Along the shore of Shell Lake when my baby brother stepped on a dead bullhead one of those spines penetrated his foot, and he got an infection which lead to blood poisoning, which lead to me waiting on him hand and foot.  He was only allowed up to go to the bathroom.  His foot was elevated in a plastic bag to draw out the poison.   Bullheads are not normally a fish that you “fish” for, but some people eat them.  I like Catfish…I consider it a good tasting fish…but I usually buy farm raised Catfish at the grocery store.

If I could I would march right into a Captain D’s Restaurant and order up some catfish and some hush puppies.  Then I would head to Richard’s Patio south of Lafayette Louisiana and order up some Crawfish, then to D and B Gumbo in Gulfport Mississippi for some Gumbo, then  to the NCO Club at Tyndall AFB in Florida to order some lobster.  Seafood Road Trip!!  Side effect… weird dreams for a few nights!  Seafood always makes me dream how about you?

  1. Minnesotans don't generally eat bullheads. Iowans swarm north to Waterville, MN, the bullhead capitol of the North Country. Why eat walleye when you can catch bullheads, I've heard them say....:) We love seafood too and Florida is a good place to get it. Though fresh caught tuna was 38 dollars a pound. :(

  2. We have bullheads here in WI also. My parents and grandparents would fish for bullheads and just loved them. Me, I'm a seafood lover like you. Yes, Florida is a great place for seafood. I used to buy fresh shrimp right off the boats and boil them up. $1.00 per pound back then (early 70's). Mmmmmmm

  4. I suppose if I ate that concentrated an amount of fish I would have weird dreams, too. I only eat the occasional salmon and tuna now and then. I remember hush puppies and thought they were very good. I haven't seen them anywhere for ages. :-)

  5. My small town has a catfish fishing contest for kids every summer and mine always enjoyed it. Fortunately, there were always nice grandpa type persons stationed there to take them off the hook with pliers for my kids. Good memories!

  6. Love seafood--I think it's a side effect of living so far inland.

  7. Trout is by far my favorite fish - nothing better than a trout fried over a campfire!

  9. Thanks Connie.....The snippet I read did not refer to the spines....nasty. Sea food.....I love, love, love Halibut; however, it has priced me right out of the tasting. Also love, love Scallops...ditto the above pricing. We eat Salmon, Tilapia and naturally Tuna.

  10. I hate to tell you but you are now going to get a big dump of snow. We had 20 cm yesterday and will get snow for the next two days. So your snow stick will get some bigger numbers.

  11. Now I'm sitting here thinking about fishing. I want to be catching crappies and walleye. I hope it's warm by the end of July when we go north for a week! Meanwhile, brrrr.

  14. Can I tag along with you on that seafood run? I Love Seafood! And I do love catfish. There is a restaurant in a small town not far from us that serves catfish on their buffet every Friday. It is the best I've ever eaten. People come from miles away to eat there!

  15. Language is a wonderful thing : if I were to walk into a shop in this country and order some cat fish and hush puppies the chances are I would walk out with a tin of pet food and a pair of shoes!

  16. I think Terry would be right along with you and Far Guy. I'll go along for the ride, but stop at the fish.

  17. Not sure why Minnesotans don't eat bullheads, but we never did. Sunfish--breaded and pan fried--that was the treat. I have never noticed that any food makes me dream more. I should pay closer attention, I guess. ;)
