Fawn and Mom

Last night on our drive we spied a couple of deer.

Doe and Fawn July 14 2012

A fawn with spots was on my photo bucket list this year.  We were thrilled to watch this doe and her fawn at the edge of Steve’s corn field.  The corn is just starting to tassel out. Were they going to eat corn..maybe?  Then again she could have just been showing the fawn around..hide here it is safe in the tall corn!

Switching her tail

“No..turn around and ..RUN!”

Chance waited to bark until they were running away.

The other day Far Guy was woodcarving out on the patio.  A spotted fawn ran out of the woods toward him and then ran down our drive.  Chance did not see it and did not give chase..most likely because spotted fawns have less odor than their mothers or perhaps the spots confused him.

Friday on my way in to work just before town a doe was dead on one side of the highway and a spotted fawn on the other side.  Such a sad sight.  There seems to be lots of road kill lately…I don’t know if the bugs drive them out of the woods or they come out to feed..but many are dead along the highway this summer.  Until someone in the State wakes up and allows more licenses in our area the highway slaughter will continue:(

  1. You were fortunate to get the shots. Wildlife is great but we know that they have to face hazards daily. I hope the fawn can fend for itself or find a group to be with. We lived in an area in Grand Rapids where a lady took care of an orphan deer. It was sure to have a hard time later in the wild. Have a good Sunday.

  2. I haven't seen a fawn yet - and since we now share our yard and gardens with deer, I should have a better chance at it. We are on a fairly busy road and we can tell when the deer are nearby as folks honk. Luckily, for me and the deer, none have gotten hit near my house.

  3. A fawn wandered through our back yard a month ago. No sign of Mama. I wonder if fawn is still alive?

  4. The shots are lovely. I agree with you, the deer population is exploding. It would be more humane to have a longer hunting season.

  5. So sad to think of the orphaned fawn and the dead doe. I do hope that something can be done to keep the deer population down other than getting slaughtered by cars!

  6. Beautiful.

I hope someone rescued the motherless fawn.

  7. Cute photos. A doe was hit near our home this weekend, too.

Hope Far Guy is feeling good today and that you guys have a restful afternoon. Hugs to Chance from Harriet.

  9. You hunt the way I do...with a camera. When Terry and I were first married, he would go bow hunting in northern Michigan, where he grew up. I never liked venison and he told me it was prably becasue those deer eat pine tips and other wild stuff, where the deer in the lower part of the state ate corn. So, you might have corn fed deer too. I know you came from a family of hunters too. What do you think about that wild venison flavor?

Me, I never hunted, accept with my camera. I have never gotten a shot of a fawn though. Yours is darling.

  10. Glad you got such good pics of a Doe and Fawn. Aren't they a pretty sight!
The corn is even pretty! So far a good year, now for some much needed rain! Have a good Sunday!

  11. Great picture.
We move into the critters territories and then the critters have trouble with our stuff.
We have to plan to live with the creatures more than we do. Hunting is certainly one option.

  12. We have one field left on our way into town that we can spot deer's eating at the eadge of woods. They are building a big hospital on the big (use to be) field next to it.. We think it will be the last crop that will be planted there.

  14. Such nice shots of mom and dappled baby. I wonder what will happen to the fawn if the mother is dead in the road. Is there any place to take the fawns? I suppose there are so many deer that nobody cares. Are there wolves around to help thin them out? Do you ever hear wolves around your area? I'm full of questions, eh? LOL! ;)

  15. What a waste. Hunting would be more humane.
    Have a great week!

  16. One more off the bucket list! Good for you....our fawns are all still in hiding. Other than the doe that had hers in my front yard we won't see any now for a while. They are cute buggers though aren't they?

  17. Aren't they beautiful! I've trained my girls not to chase them unless they're in our yard but sometimes they just feel the need. Nitty thinks the little ones are another dog to play with but they don't look at it the same and run crying for Mom. Rottweilers have a lot of rejection issues.
I know, my neighbors here all want to make them pets and feed them and they wander the streets like it's their's but God forbid one of my dogs steps foot in their yard. I've been blamed for unidentified feces, barking while mine were in the house and they never leave my yard. But the deer are okay. I have nothing against any animals....I love them all! You're right about over population though. In Iowa they used to let sharpshooters come in and shoot so many as they cause accidents on the highways etc. Over population isn't good for any species.
