I finished two books this week. A historical romance by Susanna Kearsley called The Winter Sea. It was recommended by the authors Father..he thought I would enjoy it and I did. I loaded it on my Kindle Fire. Getting used to reading on the Fire has a few drawbacks..I am always afraid I am going to drop it when I fall asleep reading. I do like that I can read in the dark. I also like being able to take books and games with me where ever I go..the Fire is small enough that it fits in my parka pocket during the winter. Sometimes I read askew..and the screen flips..and sometimes I have a hard time getting to the next page. Tap Tap Tap…finger drag.
I borrowed The Hunger Games by Susanne Collins from my Grandson Noah. I asked him what he was reading, he told me and his Mom suggested that I read it also. So I did. What a great book..it kept me interested throughout and I hope he will share the rest of the series with me or I will have to hop on over to Amazon and load it on my Kindle Fire.
I have been reading a book about a blizzard in 1888 called The Children’s Blizzard by David Laskin. It is one of those books that has so many characters that an old lady like me has a hard time remembering them all so I made myself a cheat sheet..listing the characters and what was memorable about them. I have been reading this book off and on since last summer.
I have not downloaded e-books from the Library yet..but I have been there and looked around. So far almost everything on my Kindle Fire has been free downloads.
I used to buy all my books from garage sales..I hate to admit the number of books I have in this house..just incase I need something to read. I am most likely a book hoarder. Yes, I said that right out loud. I have drawers full of books..not just one or two..many. I have books hidden all over the house..much like I suppose that someone with an alcohol problem would hide a bottle of whiskey. I have a reading problem. At least the Kindle Fire will hold lots of books for me to read without taking up drawer space:)
Books are a good thing ! .Papa here is a Steven King fan and we have tons of them all over some paperback some hardcover . I am a Dean Koontz and Fern Micheals fan so there are even more books hanging around here . I love my paperbacks I hope they never die out ! Have a wonderful Easter !
ReplyDeleteah, books are a good problem to have. i read THE HUNGER GAMES, too, and it kept my interest, even as i was horrified by its premise. but that's kind of the point, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed all three of the Hunger Games books, and I read them all on my iPad (using the free Kindle app). But I still prefer having a book in my hands. I downloaded a bunch of old classics onto my iPad for free and have been enjoying reading those whenever I need something to read. Right now I'm inundated with both electronic and paper books!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to look for the The Winter Sea. The Hunger Games series does not appeal to me at all. I've read some of it. Maybe I need to give it another look. Everyone else seems to be enthralled with it. The brightness of my Fire makes reading hard at times. I love downloading the free books. I've got so many now, I don't know if I'll ever get around to reading them all.
ReplyDeleteHang on to the print books: soon they will be as precious as the forgotten old photographs you collect.
ReplyDeleteI WAS a book hoarder....I've been redeemed. I have my request for the Hunger Games on the Library's digital site for my Kobo....I think I'm second in line.
ReplyDeleteTo me there's just nothin' like pickin' up a 'real' book and feelin' the paper between my fingers and the smell of a book. Guess ya might say I'm a tactile kinda reader.
ReplyDeleteI've got a book on my reader now that is a very good entertainin' read that I've agreed to critique but I'm havin' trouble stickin' with the tech book. Go figure!
I too have passed over the Hunger Games but there's such a buzz maybe I'll take a second look.
God bless ya sweetie and have a amazin' day! :o)
I too enjoyed The Hunger Games. I did think that it got dragged out a bit long, well could have ended with a second book. Enjoyed the movie too, have you seen that yet?:) I think reading the book first helped to enjoy the movie, and it's always fun to see how something that is in words, and so descriptive, is turned into something that is mostly visual. The only thing that I didn't like about the movie, and several 'older' viewers said the same thing, was the hand held jerky camera work right at the beginning. It was used to set a mood, but on these old eyes that were trying to find something to focus on, it was just annoying.
ReplyDeleteHave had no interest in reading a book on an electronic device, am quite happy with being able to hold and turn the pages of a real book.
If one is addicted and a hoarder, I can't think of anything better than books. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI read The Hunger Games two weeks ago and loved it so we went to see the movie last week. They did a good job but as always the book was better.
ReplyDeleteI then read the following sequels Catching Fire and Mockingjay and loved them also!
I love reading books on my Kindle (not Fire but just a Kindle). I thought Hunger Games was OK, but the other two were a bit of a disappointment...
ReplyDeleteI too am a terrible book hoarder!
I read a lot more and books I may not have read now that I have access to the public library any time I want. E-Books are a wonderful technology.
ReplyDeleteYeah...we are bookaholics here at our house, too. Got them on shelves stacked clear to the ceiling in some rooms...and we have cathedral ceilings, too. =/
ReplyDeletePeter just read The Hunger Games, and he gave me a good summary over dinner last night. Now he's waiting for Abby to give them the next two in the series. I'll just get his summaries of those, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am a bookaholic too. And the Hunger Games series is just plain good. It's written for a fourteen year old girl but everyone is enjoying it!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the new books to look into!

It's good you have books. Even if you have too many. If the electronic books disappear, you'll still have the real thing.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter to you all! :o)
I love the image of books being in every nook & cranny of your house! I'm a book hoarder, too! I'm currently reading "Hunger Games."
ReplyDeletePlay off the Page
Long before buying my Kindle I purchased Amazon Prime. It's $79 a year, but offers free shipping on lots of items - on almost all books and DVDs and many other items for sale. We do most of our Christmas shopping through Amazon and get free shipping - so over the year it pays for itself. However, with the advent of eBooks, Amazon had to change their plans a bit. If I'm not buying books that need free delivery... why should I pay for Prime? So Amazon began to offer a lot of eBooks for free to Prime members (1 per month), and there are also some TV shows and movies you can watch online for free. Phew... all of this was to explain that you can get all of the Hunger Games books for free if you are a Prime member. Now that we live closer to a town having a Prime account may not be worth it any longer... I'll have to see how it gets used during my year.
ReplyDeleteI read a children's book about the Children's Blizzard. It was written by Alison Hart who contributes to a blog called Equestrian Ink. The book was called Anna's Blizzard. Even as an adult I enjoyed the book.
I love Winter Sea and also her other books. I have them on my Kindle (also not a Fire). I have read the Hunger Games books on the Amazon Prime monthly Loaning Library; I was haunted and horrified by the first one but had to read the others to see what happened. Again, haunted and horrified. I will NOT see the movies! But I love my Kindle and most of my books are the free ones from Amazon.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of reading The Hunger Games after all the hoopla about it but wasn't sure I would like it but now that you said you've read it and liked it I might give it a try. The other 2 also sound good. I love books, I'm a hoarder of them and they are in every room of my house and bookcases filled with them! I don't have an ebook. I was looking at an Ipad for Christmas but glad I waited as there is a new one out now but not sure I want to spend the money. Thanks so much for the recommendations!
ReplyDeleteSpace is why I purchased an e-reader...then I purchased another one...but me, I'm a bit of a rebel and don't like to go with what everyone else has...I purchased two of off brands...I like them both for different reasons...JetBookLite and Kobo...I'm thinking of putting my many books up for sale or donating to a yard sale...which???decisions, decisions...Unfortunately, having the e-readers make it so easy to buy that I have even more books...but at least they don't take up space...
