Happy St. Urho’s Day!

Let the wearin’ of the purple and the green commence!  Chase some grasshoppers if you see them..make and eat some mojakka. ( I made some beef mojakka a couple of weeks ago..all packaged into individual servings and in the freezer!!)

St Urho

The big parade down in Menahga commences at 12:20 TOMORROW.  I will be there taking some photographs.  You have to be on time because the parade only lasts about five minutes. The brave townspeople will escort those pesky grasshoppers out of town.

Now for the St. Urho’s Day Poem

Ooksie kooksie kollme vee
Santia Urho is the boy for me
He chase out the hopper as big as pirds
Never before have I heard those words
He really told those bugs of green
Bravest Finn I ever seen
Some celebrate for St. Pat and his snake
But that Urho boy got what it takes
He got tall and strong on feelia sour
And ate Kalla Mojakkaa every hour
Thats why that guy dould chase those beetles
That crew as thick as jack pine needles
So let's give a cheer
in our very best way
On the sixteenth of March
St. Urho's Day!

Kalla Mojakkaa is Fish Soup..you can make that if you wish..or you can make beef or pork or lamb.  I always make beef mojakka. I will be passing on that feelia sour (thick sour milk).

I missed the parade last year because we had an ice storm..this year we are supposed to have 68 degrees and sunshine:)

  5. I had never heard of St. Urho until I lived with a Finn for seven years who was from northern Minnesota. ;) I remember visiting the statue but can't remember where. Must have been in Menahga. I guess. Or maybe there are more than one of those around. Urho always gives me a giggle, but saving crops was no laughing matter, so I apologize. Have fun at the parade. :)

  6. I have never heard of "pirds" or is it supposed to be "birds". And should this be "grew" instead of "crew" in this sentence? That crew as thick as jack pine needles

  7. Someone who could chase hoppers out of town is certainly worth celebrating. Those nasty critters come through and destroy crops and show no mercy. Wish I could be there for the parade!

  8. It will be great to get rid of all those grasshoppers. We are having rain tomorrow but I bet it won't reach that far. No ice for sure for the great chase. I am going to look up you food to see what you are eating.

    1. I found it right away on the internet and it sounds good. The one with fish heads didn't really appeal to me.

  10. Seems a funny time of the year to celebrate, as I'm sure there are no grasshoppers in Finland in the middle of March. But, it sounds like it will be warm enough tomorrow where you are that a grasshopper isn't as hard to imagine:)

  12. How could I have lived this long without knowing about him? Grasshoppers..what do you know. So, what's the story about him...myth or man? Are you going to share the recipe just in case it's a bad year for grasshoppers here in the South? They're actually bad every year...flying in my face eating everything in sight! But so far there's not been so many as to make the sky dark so I guess I'll be okay but just in case I would post the recipe if I were you. Happy St. Urho's Day....belated! Don't forget the pictures of the parade!

  13. It is going to be 68 degrees there today? Is that a typo? That is pretty warm for March in Northern MN! I hope not a typo so you can have a comfy temp for parade.
