Gone are the days when everyone wore a hat. This photo was most likely taken on a Sunday.
This is Far Guys Dad, his Grandpa, his Grandma, his Great Aunt Charolette and second cousin Roxie. This photo was taken in Omaha in 1948. Grandma and Grandpa must have went to visit. Grandpa never traveled very far from home so it must have been a special occasion.
These women are sisters in law. Grandma married the oldest son, and Charolette married the youngest son. Both were marvelous women whose company I enjoyed. The beautiful child Roxie..lives in Florida and occasionally reads the blog to stay in touch with her Minnesota cousins.
Photographs were often taken outside, the light was better and you did not require a flash.
I have begun to scan some more old photos from Far Guys family, they have been in the trunk upstairs..waiting for me:)
Thanks for the memory jog! Those flash bulbs cost extra money, and it was a really really special occasion to take an indoor photo. My oh my, haven't we come a long way. As I remember, the bulbs wouldn't go off, more wasted money. Mom used to spit on the end of the bulb before she screwed it in!!!
ReplyDeleteI remember my Grandmother struggling with flashbulbs much like Muffy's Marks says... and how she hate the cube ones that spun after the "hopefully it flashed?"
ReplyDeleteMost of the pictures of my Mom's grandparents show them wearing hats when they were outside. My dad's parent's did not, I think they were about 10-15 years younger.
I remember licking the bulb...funny stuff...I think you can find them around somewhere if you look hard enough and if you really want them...

I wonder if wearing hats back then was regional or usually done everywhere. I don't remember seeing hats on the pictures of my family like that. But then again, they were military and might have not wanted to wear them when they weren't working.

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, brings back memories. I remember in the 50s seeing my dad leave for work in his suit and hat. Felt or fabric hats in the winter, straw hats in the summer.
ReplyDeleteI remember my Grandmother always wearing a hat when she traveled to visit us. I'm sure my mom must have had hats, too, but I don't remember them as clearly.
ReplyDeleteOh my... the flash bulbs! Remember how they'd swell and be crumbly after they were used? Oh, and how 'bout the flash cubes that came later!
I wish I had pictures of my grandparents from 1948. These pictures remind me of them.

ReplyDeleteOh how I remember those days of dressin' up complete with hat and gloves when I was a little farm chicklett. Mama had quite the collection of hats back in the day.

What a great photo. I love seeing their clothes, hats etc. Most all of my family's old photos were taken by the front doors of the various houses. My dad and grandpa always wore hats like this.
ReplyDeleteYep. Everyone wore hats - men and women. And, unlike today's baseball cap wearing guys, the men back then remembered their manners and removed their hats when entering a building. I also remember gloves being a fashion staple for the ladies.

ReplyDeleteLooks like the female monarch in England is the only ones that ware hats and dress-up anymore. We dress to casual even in church.
Awesome old photos ! My mum used to wear hats with her outfits and even a silk scarf from time to time ! Here Papa is the only one that wears a hat it is the old English sports type hat and even baseball hats and cowboy hats he is a hat person ! Yes times have changed as has the mannerisms of people today ! Great post . Have a wonderful day !
DeleteYour photos always bring back memories for me too. My dad still wears a dress hat. Always, all winter. He's 84 and I've never seen him wear a ball cap (like my husband). I have seen photos of my mother , sister and I in hats too.
ReplyDeleteI remember those flash bulbs. They were as big as golf balls. I had forgotten about those. Thanks for the memories. Is the one lady, I think Charlotte, wearing fur coat? I remember when my mother got a mouton coat for Christmas in 1957, I think. My sister wears it now. It's still gorgeous. My sister finally btoke it to her, not too long before she died, that Mouton is not fur, but wool.
I'm sorry about your cousin passing. It's so young. I wish I had that many cousins. I only have 2 and I never see them and haven't talked to them in a few years now.

Connie, that reminds me of my Dad -- he never left the house without a hat. He kept them in hat boxes and they all read 'Stetson.' After he retired, he wore hundreds of baseball caps that he collected, but when he was 'dressed up,' he still wore the felt or straw hats. We teased him about being so old fashioned, but he never changed.
