I finished the quilt square! It is done is plenty of time!
Here it is ready to backstitch.
Back stitching is just that.. sewing backwards stitches with one or two threads.
Back stitching complete and the work of art was signed.
The next step requires that you cut the excess of the waste fabric away.
Then you soak the whole thing in warm water..it softens up the waste cloth that must be removed.
Far Guy loves to pull the stitches..he pulls them one at a time with a tweezers. The stitches are exposed one by one..it took him about an hour of gentle tugging to get all the waste cloth removed.
I am so glad it is done..one more project off the list. No more cross stitching for me for awhile. It will be interesting to see what birds my other cousins have come up with! This quilt will be put together and hand quilted and given away at the Family Picnic in 2013. The girls decided that having a picnic every year was getting old so they will skip the usual picnic this year:)
Mom used to make quilts & mittens and stocking caps... and some, after all these years still keep me warm... :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful block...wonderful family tradition.
ReplyDeleteOkay, call me dumb but I have never see this done...cross stitch yes but on this cloth that you remove....no. So what is keeping it attached to the new cloth?
ReplyDeleteLovely work , love the little Gold Finch ! Have a great day !
DeleteHi Changes the quilt square fabric and the waste cloth are on top of each other. The waste cloth is just a fabric made up of tiny squares so that a pattern can be stitched upon it and the bottom fabric at the same time..then the waste cloth is removed and the stitches and your fabric remains..I hope this helps to explain it:)
DeleteI have never heard of this, either. Pulling away the fabric afterwards--wow! So it ends up being a kind of embroidery patch of sorts, I guess. I hope you get pictures of the end results of this project. :)
ReplyDeleteYou are so incredibly talented. It's not just cross stitch, but quilting, carving, cooking... and blogging! You rock! :-)
ReplyDeleteVery nice! You do good work.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, I love it. I can't wait to see a photo of the finished product. It will be interesting to see what your other cousins choose for their subject. Have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty!!! Woohoo...I knew you'd make the deadline.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see the whole thing come together...I've got a feelin' it'll be great. You did a bang~up job there sweetie.
Have a blessed and productive week sweetie!!! :o)
Very nice block. It's great you can get the family to make a quilt together.
ReplyDeleteLove it! The back stitching really made the thistle look prickly. Ewwww... it reminds me of the battle we have coming!
ReplyDeleteSo, we have to wait until 2013 to see the complete quilt?! No fair!
Oh, it looks lovely! Well done.
ReplyDeleteYAY it is done and it is very cute - I love it! Hope you are able to show us the finished quilt.
ReplyDeletePrecious little birdie! Can't wait to see the quilt, long wait though!
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful Connie! I never did get into cross stitching. My eyes go crazy when doing small stitch stuff. Bet the quilt will be really nice!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful block! Back-stitching is tedious, but it always makes the piece "pop" and come alive.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of creating a cousins' quilt for a family gathering.
Beauty job, I used to cross stitch, and I know how hard it can be. Beautiful.

Beautiful work - the golfinch is fab, but I especially like the thistle, being in Scotland. I had no idea you had to remove the waste fabric. The only quilting I did was at school, with fabric hexagons cut out from paper where you tacked the fabric on then stitched the hexagons together. I think I had the patience to do a cushion cover :-) I love American quilts though - they look Properly Cosy! Jo
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful quilt block. I enjoy cross-stitching but haven't picked it up in a while. I should finish a VERY long-term project while we have no cats to grab at the threads! It will be great to see the finished quilt.
ReplyDeleteThat's really interesting how you did that. I haven't seen it done before, to my knowledge; and wasn't sure how it worked.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
Beautiful! I've never use waste cloth. Ann
ReplyDeleteNice work!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty square! I know you are glad to be finished.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on your square. It will be great to eventually see it in the total quilt.
ReplyDeleteGlad you got it finished and it is beautiful !
ReplyDeleteBlessings
It is magnifique! Do you get together soon to see all the birds?
ReplyDeleteIt turned out beautiful! Is the back stitching like outlining it? I could see the difference on the outside of the design. Did you use muslin for the base cloth ie; the material for the block itself? I'm curious because I used to cross stitch and would like to try the waste cloth because then you can cross stitch on anything you want which is pretty cool, I think. Really pretty....you did a great job on it!
